Taylor Strelley
« on: Saturday 17 June 06 08:09 BST (UK) »
One line of my family - the Taylors - were millers at Strelley from about  1830 - 1880. Thomas Taylor was the first followed by his son Thomas Taylor. I was always told it was at Strelley Mill. However, a DH Lawrence fan tells me there was no such place and in his books, the name Strelley Mill was actually based on a place called Felley Mill. Whats more, no Taylors were associated with Felley Mill. Could someone please lookup any of the censuses from 1841, 51, 61 or 71 and tell me if there was a placename at all for Thomas Taylor and family or a nearby entry with a placename, house name, farm name or similar so I could narrow the place they lived at down. I saw the entries once but sadly took no notice or copies!!! Its a common name but there are few entries in Strelley. Thomas Taylor senior married Mary Atkin in 1823 with sons Samuel and Thomas following. Thos Taylor senior was born in 1796 and lived into his 70's, son Thomas was born in 1836 and went to the big mill in the sky in 1872. His wife Elise also died young in 1870/71.

Regards

Dave Elliott

Hello Tati

What a charming little girl you look like.  ;)

Thank you so much for your reply which has given me a few lines of enquiry to say the least. I didnt realise they had so many children and I appreciate your efforts. I was intrigued when I saw Thos Taylor was a patient at a Hydropathist and for those interested, you can read about these characters on

http://www.wirksworth.org.uk/A12HYDRO.htm

I dont know what he suffered from but the treatment cant have worked too well since he died the next year as did his wife. Any ideas anyone?  I am now having a look at the old maps to see if I can get a handle on where they were living but I suspect Windmill Farm was where the Corn Mill was.

Thank you again.

The information Tati, (the cute girl in the picture) has supplied has been of more help than anticipated. In researching more and looking at where people were in the 1881 census, I actually turned up another illegitimate daughter and funnily enough, found another lady cut five years from her age in the 1881 census! How odd I should discover it 125 years later.

However, not all mysteries have been solved, specifically, it would help if someone can tell me

(i) In the 1861 census, where was Thomas Taylor. He was born in 1836 in Strelley, Notts and his occupation most likely a Miller. He would have been unmarried.

(ii) When did Elise Taylor of Strelley, Notts, born 1832 in Tutbury Staffs die - it was between 1871 and 1881.

Any help is most appreciated.

Dave
