      That is definately where it came from - only the version I heard was that it was British soldiers, not that it matters. Most people today associate the word with any cheap wine - red or white.

I have just been looking at a calender near my desk and the pinup is an Aussie soldier in Poziers wearing a German "pickelhaube" hat, now I have a couple of ideas but can anyone confirm what this means: Where is Bob when we need him?

HAUBE means HOOD and PICKEL is a spike (from Pike), so perhaps the translation is Spiked Hood?

I can only confirm HAUBE though.

not so weird and wonderful.
the battle of the somme started on 1st july 1916 and finished in november that year,by then 250,000 british and allied soldiers had been killed or wounded,thats when the british government stopped selling MACHINE GUNS to germany.
