Looking for parents and other info on William Andrews born Abt 1796 and diedDec 1842 Berwick, Northumberland and married Charlotte Walker born Abt 1801 Chatham, Kent and died May 1854 Berwick, Northumberland. They had at least a son named Thomas born Aug 1831 St Helen British North Atlantic Protectorate and married Jane born abt 1839 Berwick, Northumberland. I would to know if Thomas had a son named James born 1863 Scotland

Hi Julie,

this looks like the family on the 1841 census

HO.107/844/1 folio 16 page 24
living at Golden Square, Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland

Wm Andrews/45/shoemaker/not born in county
Charlotte Andrews/40/not born in county
Charlotte Andrews/15/born in foreign parts
Francis Andrews/15/born in foreign parts
Alexander Andrews/14/born in foreign parts
Thomas Andrews/8/born in foreign parts
John Andrews/4/not born in county

Francis is a male
Alexander is a female

a note about the 1841 census, ages upto 15 were exact (assuming people knew how old they were) all ages over 15 were rounded down to be divisible by 5

hope this helps

Bee :)

Hi :)

There is a Thomas Andrews on the 1871 census aged 37 birth place is given as Africa-British Subject, he has several children born in Berwick as well as 9 year old James who was born in Scotland as was Thomas' wife Agnes.

I can give you the full details if you think it might be your family

i was wondering if you cand find more info on this family and see if it's the right one as I don't know if Africa-British Subject fits in with the one I have of being born in St Helenas (Br Poss). Was this St Helena part of Africa back then or what?

Here's the family in 1881 RG11/5130 folio 7 page 8

living at 20 Chapel Street, Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland

ANDREWS
Thomas/head/mar/46/labourer/St Helena Br.Poss.
Agnes/wife/mar/41/Scotland
James/son/18/pitman coal/Scotland
John/son/16/scholar/Berwick
Charlotte/dau/14/scholar/Berwick
Margaret/dau/12/scholar/Berwick
Isabella/dau/10/scholar/Beriwck
Elizabeth/dau/7/scholar/Berwick
Jane/dau/2/Berwick

I'm guessing that the 'Br Poss' in Thomas' birthplace means British possibly, probably the census enumerator wasn't too sure where St Helena was.  Maybe in the 1871 census the enumerator put Africa as it was probably the nearest place that he had heard of.
