1871 Stanley Family From Yorkshire

Hi I would be really gratefull if someone could find Henry Stanley b abt 1838 owlerton,Yorkshire his wife Mary A Stanley b 1838 Sheffield his son Joseph Stanley b 1858 Sheffield and daughter Ellen Stanley b 1860 Sheffield.I managed to get this info from the 1861 census where they lived at 42 George Street sorry this is all the info i have.Thanks Claire.

Hi Claire

You have posted this in Gloucestershire - do you think they moved?

I can find a Joseph "stepson" to a Margret STANLEY, but not the others - and they are still in Sheffield??

Hi,
     Thanks for looking for me,i realsied after i posted it that i posted it on the gloucestershire one,all i know about is joseph in 1881 he is with a clara in cambridge and they had several children but i could never find a marriage for them and in 1891 they lived in Gloucester and 1901 lived in cheltenham where joseph ,clara and the children died.Thanks for the info from the 1871 census maybe some relation.

My Yorkshire geography isn't up to much, so I don't know whether this is anywhere near?  I think it is near Barnsley.

Sorry Claire, I have been misleading you!

There are two Ellens in 1861 and the one born Skew Hill? is not yours: RG9/3458/64/20

Meaning we have still lost yours in 1871 - have you checked for deaths for any of the family yet?

OK the coincidence of occupations has persuaded me that the Joseph I found is probably the correct one:

1861 census RG9/3463/58/19 (you already have this)

Henry STANLEY H M 23 - file cutter - Yorkshore Owlerton
Mary A W M 23 - Sheffield
Joseph son 3 - do
Ellen dau 8 mo - do

1871 census RG10/4662/68/22

Margret STANLEY H Widow 25 - housekeeper - Sheffield
Joseph stepson U 14 - filecutter - do

Address: 111 back of Gatefield, Nether Hallam, Yorkshire


He is a filecutter like his father. How does this tie in with his occupation in later censuses?

Now it looks as though Henry has been widowed, remarried to Margret ?? and then died himself - all in 10 years!
