Edith Dale -emigration?
« on: Saturday 24 June 06 20:17 BST (UK) »
According to one of my cousins my Grandad's sister  - Edith M Dale (born Henfield Sx 1927) emigrated to Canada.

I have checked through the marriage BMD and haven't found a maraige for her (as far as I know?), but can't be sure she didn't marry before emigrating.

How do I go about tracing her?

Any help much appreciated,

Cheers all,
Mark

Hi Mark,

If you had an idea when Edith emigrated to Canada would help.  Have you tried locating her on the census to see if she is still in the UK, or if she was still single or married.

Hi Mark

Just realised Edith was born 1927 so you cannot search the census records.  Sorry, I obviously didn't read her birth date properly.!!!

Thanks for the replies Janette.

Not really sure when she went  to Canada but am pretty sure it would have been when she was full age so after 1945.

There was some suggestion she married a Canadian Soldier, but whether that was before or after she went I don't know. Will keep on searching,

Thanks again,
Mark

Hi Mark

Try the following link, it has emigration information and lists of ships sailing to Canada.  It has loads of information on it, hope it is of some help.

Hi Janette,

Thanks for the link. I've looked through this before, but there doesn't seem to be anything after 1937,and as Edith was born in 1927 she most definitely went after that.

Thanks anyway.

Tracking someone this late is going to be difficult.  Some possibilities:

1) if your great-grandfather left a will, she might be listed there hopefully with married name:
http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/cms/1226.htm

2) if the family lived still in Henfield or some other relatively small place you might find reference to the marriage/immigration in local newspapers, although these might be difficult to find.  Obituaries for other members of the family might make reference as well.  If they moved to central London then not so much.

Thanks for the suggestions Jorose,

Unfortunately wills in my family are few and far between - not a lot of dosh around. Will check out site anyway.

Much of the family are still in Henfield & local area. There's one surviving sister too -She's 91 & I'm meeting her in July for the first time & hope she has a good memory so I can get a few answers to these questions.

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark

Have you considered posting your request on the Rootschat Emigrants to Canada board? Someone there may be able to help.

Dawn
