Salmon family, North Riding Yorkshire, Coxwold and Flawith (Alne)
« on: Monday 26 June 06 22:21 BST (UK) »
I have an Ann(e) Salmon(d) in my tree, who almost certainly was the one who married William Hall from Market Weighton in St Saviour's Church, York in about 1832. She was born in Coxwold and I am therefore assuming she was a Salmon. (She was not able to sign her name at the marriage). In the IGI I have found a record of her born in 1799, in Coxwold, daughter of William Salmon and Jane Appleton. The marriage is also shown in the IGI records. I have records of her for subsequent censuses and she consistently describes herself as from Coxwold.

Also in my tree, I have a Thomas Salmon, innkeeper and cooper in Tholthorpe (1841 census) whose sister Sarah married into the Lawson family (blacksmiths) from Raskelf. They were from Flawith (church in Alne). There was also a contemporary Thomas Salmon from Coxwold, whom I believe was probably the brother of Ann above. Several researchers appear to have confused the two Thomases and not found Ann at all.

Can anyone look at the Parish Registers of Coxwold to confirm any of this? I have once seen the microfilm in the Borthwick Institute (York) which is now housed at the University, but did not find Ann at the time as I was not looking early enough.

Thanks.

K Lawson.

Hi,

I had chance to look at the Coxwold registers for you today.  I checked baptisms from Aug 1791 to Nov 1812 for children of Thomas SALMON (it's definately Thomas not William) and Jane APPLETON and found:

William born (missing from edge of film  >:() baptised 11 Oct 1795

Anne b. ?th April 1799 bap. 18 May 1799

Susanna b. 26 Jan 1806 bap. 27 Jan 1806

father Thomas was a cooper of Coxwold.

Couldn't see a Thomas for this couple in the period searched but there was also:

Parents William SALMON and Elizabeth WYNN (WINN):

Jane b. 29 Sep 1799 bap. 8 Oct 1799

Elizabeth b. 6 Oct 1801 bap. 11 Oct 1801

Thomas b. 17 Dec 1805 bap. 14 Jan 1806

Robert b. 11 March 1809 bap. 12 March 1809

father William was also a cooper of Coxwold.

There was also a James SALMON b. 13 Mar 1803 bap. 18 Mar 1803 son of Thomas SALMON and Jane STOREY, Thomas also being a cooper of Coxwold.  There was at least one other child for this couple but I ran out of time I'm afraid.

The exact dates were quite hard to follow as the margin was cut off in places so may not have them all spot on.

I hope this is of some help.

Many thanks for looking up the Coxwold records for the Salmon family. In fact only last night I sent a message to the York Family History Society regarding a member who also has an interest in that family / those families.

I think you have found the 'Ann(e)' that I am looking for. Certainly it is the one from the IGI which I had already located and assumed was the right one. It just happened that I put William by mistake, but realised almost immediately.

It would seem that the William and Thomas might have been brothers and the other Thomas a cousin. It is interesting that the Thomas Salmon from Flawith (whose sister Sarah married Joseph George Lawson from Raskelf, botn 1795) was also a cooper and innkeeper (New Inn at Tholthorpe).

Did you have a copy of the microfiche, or did you see it in a Library?

I would still be interested in the record of the marriage of Ann(e) to William Hall from Market Weighton, from St Saviour's Church, York, about 1832.

Thanks again,

K Lawson.

Thought you might be interested to know that my paternal ancestors came from Raskelf.

My G/G/G/Grandparents were married in Raskelf in 1854. Joseph George Lawson was a witness to the marriage.

Hi Trevor

I only have JG Lawson on a marriage cert. Thanks for confirming that he was indeed the parish clerk.

I live overseas, so a friend went to the Borthwick Inst and looked up the Raskelf pr's for me. She thought that he might have been the clerk as his name did appear on the records quite a few times.

Thanks for the contributions on what I always think of as "my" LAWSON family from Raskelf! We have most, if not all of that information, but not tabulated so nicely! I(What is your connection?). If anyone comes across further details of Mark from Alnwick, that would be really interesting. There was a birth of a John, son of Mark & Dorothy in Hamsterly (Co Durham), in the right year, but I have no proof it was the right one. As for Joseph George, he was indeed the Clerk like John before him, as also was Thomas who married Ann Hebson. If any other relatives are interested, I may have additional information. I am also keen to find the connection with William LAWSON, around at the same time and a very close contemporary of John (born and died a year earlier). Also a younger William who married Eleanor Edwards - who was he? There are a few loose ends amongst the Raskelf Lawsons.

So back to the SALMONS - Sarah certainly married Joseph George, but it is the Coxwold SALMONS who provoked this original enquiry (see my original post on this topic). I am pretty sure there must have been a connection between these two SALMON families, but have not found it.

K Lawson.

The connection with the LAWSON's is through ANN HEBDON who married THOMAS LAWSON, ANN was the 2nd great grandaunt of my step-sister.
