Hiring a Professional Researcher
« on: Tuesday 27 June 06 20:46 BST (UK) »
In a quandary!!! Having trouble locating family in Scotland (from here in the US)so I have begun thinking about hiring someone to assist me or do the research?

Is this a good idea? Is there a Society or organization of professional researchers in Scotland? Has anyone hired a Scottish professional researcher? What are the pros and cons of hiring a researcher? What should you expect to receive from their services? Are they regulated? What questions should one ask prior to hiring? Are there any questions I should have asked here that I didn't ask?   Any other issues I should consider prior to hiring? Thanks.

Hi yn9man

If you search Rootschat with something like "professional researcher" the topic u have mentioned will come up many times.

I think the two things to remember are - be specific in your search parameters, and never never pay any money until you have detailed results ( positive or negative) Ask for written confirmation of searches made and results.

- you may think it's far from the States, but it's closer than you think with Rootschat

Hi yn9man !

You should try and get as much as you can from RootsChat and then decide IF you have to consider a researcher !!
Ask away on the Scotland board and see what you can come up with first !!

You may be pleasantly surprised - some pretty amazing people on here !!

We're all here to help where we can  :)

Maybe there might be some things like Kirk Sessions records or Legal stuff that are less generallyaccessible but between Scotlands People, IGI, LDS FH Centres and RC I'm sure you'll get much of what you need.
