Rachel Sarah Rowe
« on: Saturday 01 July 06 22:24 BST (UK) »
Hi  :)

Would someone please check the 1861 census for a Rachel Sarah Rowe, daughter of Benjamin and Sarah Rowe born aprox 1846 in Great Wigborough, Essex County.

Still trying to find a marriage for Benjamin and Sarah to determine her maiden name.  She is listed as being born in Clopton, Suffolk County.

Thanks

Pat

Hello Pat

from FreeBMD is a marriage at Lexden district, Essex in Mar qtr 1845 vol 12  page 205,  that includes Benjamin Row but has 2 Sarahs. Sarah Dennett & Sarah Mills.  Lexden district is where they are on 1851 census that records daughter Rachel born abt 1849.

also from FreeBMD is birth index of Rachel Row again in Lexden Sept qtr 1848 vol 12 page 130.  Send of for the birth cert to confirm mother's maiden name.

regards John

Hi John:

I hadn't found the marriage of John & Sarah, I neglected to drop the "e" so thanks for that.  I have the 1851 census with the "e" which I should remember doesn't mean a thing.

I was also hoping with the 1861 census to find the siblings of Rachel.

Thanks again

Pat

Hi Pat

Are we looking for Benjamin ROWE (b abt 1819 Gt Wigborough Essex according to 1851) in Census 1861 with a different wife perhaps??

Did Sarah die btw 1851 and 1858 and Benjamin ROWE remarry to a Mary Ann STEVENS in 1858?
Freebmd: Dec Qtr 1858 Rochford  4a 335

In 1861 is this:
Great Wakering, Essex
Ref: RG9/1086, Folio 87, page 41
RD: Rochford , Sub-RD: Great Wakering
Address: A Cottage
Head: Benjamin ROWE age 40, Ag Lab, b Gt Wakering Essex
Wife: Mary Anne ROWE age 35, b Stambridge Essex
Daug: Emma STEVENS age 14 b Rochford Essex

In 1871 is this
Great Wigborough, Essex
ref:  RG10/1690 , Folio 146, page 3
RD: Lexden , Sub-RD: Peldon
Clarkhouse lane
Benjamin ROWE age 54, AG Lab b Gt Wigborough Essex
Wife: Mary Ann ROWE age 45, b Stambridge Essex
Son: George W ROWE age 9, b Pagelsham Essex

So - Im thinking -  Rachel is not with a parent in 1861 - c/be as a Grandaughter perhaps. She may or may not be with birth siblings, but looks like she may have had  a step sister and a half brother at least.....?

Cheers

Hi

Hi Pat
Aha - I wonder if this is her:

1861 - Rochford, Essex
Ecclesiastical parish: Rochester
Ref: RG9/1085 , Folio 21, page 5
Back Lane
Head: Mary SMITH age 85, Widow, Clng Woman Labourer Widow, b Boston Suffolk
Aunt: Rachel ROME age 13, Scholar, b: X Gt Wigborough

Obviously this 13 year old isn't the Aunt of 85 yr old Mary  ;D probably the other way round....and given Mary's age & birthplace, possibly a great-aunt on her mother Sarah's side?

Following Mary - this is her in 1851:
1851 - Rochford Essex
Ecclesiastical parish:Rochester
Ref: :HO107/1777, Folio 376, page 23
Back Lane
Head: Mary CLARKE age 26, widow, Semstress. b Rayleigh, Essex
Mother-in-Law: Mary SMITH age 75, widow, Parish Pauper Ag Lab'r, b Bowsdell, Suffolk

This may be Mary in 1841, but not so certain - it says "Y" born in County (of Essex)
1841 - Rayleigh, Essex (Hundred of Rochford)
Ref: : HO107/337/16 , Folio 39, page 33
RD: Rochford , Sub-RD: Rayleigh
Kings Lane
Jno SMITH age 70, Bricklayer (Y)
Mary SMITH age 60 (Y)
Jas SMITH age 20 (Y)

Hi Ambly  :)

What do you make of the diffference  of Benjamins age in the 1861 & 1871 census, also place of birth?

I had thought I had found him in the 1881 census living with a Mary A. and lodging at Barking, Essex.  His birthdate is right but M.A. is not - 10 years out.

I have not found a death for Sarah and have not confirmed her maiden name.

Just started working on this branch of the family.

I believe you found here in the 1861 with her great aunt.  Will have to continue to snoop around  :D

Thanks again for your help

Pat  :)

Hi Pat

I'm inclined to believe the 1881 Benjamin you found is him :

1881 - Barking, Essex
Ref: RG11/1747, Folio 69, page 20
RD: Romford, Sub-RD: Ilford
Longbridge Cottages
Head: William G MURRELL age 66, Farm Labourer b Hyde Park, Middlesex
Wife: Elizabeth Ann MURRELL age 65, b Little Wakering, Essex
Grand-daugh: Adelaide M WALLIS age 10, b Upminister, Essex
Lodger: Benjamin ROWE 62, Farm Labourer, b Nr Colchester, Essex
Lodger: Mary A ROWE age 65, b Nr Southend, Essex

Despite Mary A's age being 65, when we would have expected abt 55 - her place of birth as Nr Southend does fit:.
Her age could be out, because the MURRELL's gave the information and did not know her right age or the enumerator incorrectly wrote 65 instead of 55 (the original clearly does say 65).
http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/place/place_page.jsp?p_id=6907
STAMBRIDGE (Great), a parish in Rochford district, Essex; 1½ mile E by N of Rochford, and 3¾ NNE of Southend r. station.

As to Benjamin's  difference in age & birth places 1876/1871 again this could just be an error on the enumerator's part or a misunderstanding - it's certainly not an uncommon occurencce in the Census!

Then, the 1881 Benjamin, his age is right as you say but  I can't discover how Nr  Colchester might be a wide description for being born Great Wigborough or Great Wakering?  Then again, Elizabeth MURRELL was born in Great Wakering, and one would assume she at least would know that Benjamin was from the same parts as she? The MURRELL's could be relatives too - perhaps  thru Elizabeth.

As a caution though:  in the 1861 Census for Barking, is a Benjamin ROW b abt 1811 Colchester - with a wife is named Ruth. He could be the same man as the 1881 man above with his age all wrong & who has remarried...... :P This lark was never meant to be straight forward, I guess!   ;D

Cheers

Hi Ambly ;D

Lots to chew on here!

Thanks for all the input - but now its time for vacation - will be away from a computer for a few weeks .  All your info will give me something to think about while away fishing!

I guess this is the same as fishing! :D

Take care

Pat :)
