Mary Grieveson - Chester le street - IS COUSIN TO WHO?
« on: Monday 03 July 06 11:12 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have a birth certificate for the following person.

Mary Grieveson born March 1846 living Pelton area of Chester le Street, Parents are a John Grieveson and a Mary, maiden name listed as HESLIP.

The query I have is that I have found Mary Grieveson on the 1851 census age 5 living with a James and a Dorothy Bambrough.  Mary is listed as being a cousin.

James Bambrough married a Dorothy HESLOP 1850 Durham Northern.

John Grieveson married a Mary HESLOP Bishopwearmouth in 1836.  So I think the HESLIP on the birth certificate should actually be HESLOP.

If Mary is listed as being the cousin of Dorothy, then Dorothy Parents and Marys Parents must be related, brothers or sisters.

Dorothys parents are on the 1841 census  William Heslop and a Mary.  William born around 1786.

Mary Grieveson (HESLOP) was born around 1815.  Surely that is such a big gap between brothers and sisters.

Can anyone help me in sorting this out.  Unless Dorothy and Mary were actually sisters and little Mary on the census should be listed as niece instead of a cousin.

Hi Janette,

I have been trying to understand your problem
and thought it may help to look at Mary on the
1851 census.
I can't find her? I think the heat is taking its toll!

Hi Pels

Yes you have found Mary on the 1851 census.  Her surname is transcribed as GRANISON but on the census it looks like GREVISON. Mary is listed as the cousin.

Ref:  HO107/2393/182/13

Marys parents on the 1851 are a John and Mary Greavson

Ref:  HO107/2394/197/24.

The IGI does have a christening for a Mary Heslop, with parents as William and Mary - this on 12 JUN 1815 Wolviston, Durham.

Curiously, the only listing for a Dorothy Heslop c1831 shows a mother as Elizabeth, but this is a submitted IGI entry.

It's possible that the age difference between William and Mary might be down to them having different mothers - after all, its less than 30 years and if William's mother died and his father remarried it could explain the cousin connection.

However, I think the term may also have been used a little more loosely in the 19th century, so it could well be that Mary b1846 is actually the neice of Dorothy and James, as you suggest.

I'm sure you'll puzzle this out with further digging!

cheers

Paul

Hi Paul

Thanks for taking the time to read and answer my query, I will do a bit more digging and see what I can find.  Though the Mary Heslop born 1815 could also be one of the births I have been wanting.  If she is the Mary Heslop who married a John Grieveson.  Though I haven't got a clue to where Wolviston is, will have a look on the map to find if is it near to the areas connected.

Thanks again

Hi Janette

Wolviston is just outside of Hartlepool - not too far from Easington, which is up the coast.

Good hunting!
cheers

Paul

Hi

thanks for that.  Easington is the place of birth (according to the census,) of John Grieveson, who married Mary Heslop. Their marriage was in Bishopwearmouth. So now I know I am looking in the right area. Is Bishopwearmouth close by also?

Hi again Janette

According to Genuki : Bishopwearmouth is 9 miles
from Easington, therefore not too far.

Best wishes,

Pels
