George Drage MAKEHAM - COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 04 July 06 21:13 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have a puzzle to solve on behalf of some friends.  They have a death certificate for George Drage MAKEHAM, died Sharnbrook, 22-Feb-1969, age 86, retired gardener.  Certificate is dated a few days after the death but they don't know whom he was except that he is presumed to be a relative in some way.

The cert puts his birth abt 1883 and a quick search of BMDs indeed found him Jan-Mar 1883.  Census searches for 1881 and 1991 revealed that his middle name, DRAGE was his mother's maiden name.

Parents were Eliza DRAGE and John MAKEHAM, mar Jul-Sep 1879, Bedford.  Siblings were Annie, Mabel, Jane Hephzibar and Cyril H

In 1891 Census George D is 8, born Milton Ernest (RG12/1245/46/14) Right middle initial, Right age, right birthplace.

1n 1901 Census George D is 18, single and a gardener, born Milton Ernest (RG13/1486/40/1) Right middle initial, Right age, right occupation, right birthplace.

In Jan-Mar 1905 George Drage MAKEHAM married Agnes Emma BASS or Emily Kate GRAY in Ampthill, Beds.

BUT - the family name I need to link him with is LOWE.
Now a George MAKEHAM married a Winifred Catherine LOWE in Bedford, Jan-Mar 1900 but this is completely at odds with all the above.

Any ideas?

Hi Sherwood

Just a thought: have you checked the indexes for the death of a Winifred MAKEHAM between 1900 - 1905?  I am thinking in terms of a second marriage.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

1n 1901 Census George D is 18, single and a gardener, born Milton Ernest (RG13/1486/40/1) Right middle initial, Right age, right occupation, right birthplace.

... and some DRAGEs living next door!

Now looking at George W MAKEHAM* 18 b Fenlake in 1901 (I know, you haven't mentioned him) we see a visitor Eleanor BASS 25 Cardington.

*Transcribed as MAKCHAM - could be George Walter who possibly married 1909 (but 3 men on the page)

Oh, what fun! :)

Sorted.  A marriage certificate turned up showing that George Drage MAKEHAM married into my friend's family in 1952.  By then he was a widower aged 69.  He married a widow Sylvia Jane May KNIGHT age 67.  KNIGHT is my friend's family name.

My attempt to link to LOWE was one of those blind alleys you find yourself in from time to time in this game.

Thanks for input in any case.
