Army Census Records 1891
« on: Wednesday 27 October 04 12:00 BST (UK) »
Is there any central location to search Army personnel in the 1891 census?  I know the regiment that my relative was in but not their location.

Thanks

Welcome to rootschat. Be more specific and we will see if we can help you. Your topic is, at the moment, too wide to answer.

That reminds me that I have spotted my great uncle as being in the Army in Sheffiled when the 1901 census was taken. If I check out the census image, will that tell me which regiment he was in, or will it simply have the name of the barracks? I've not checked it before becaise I cannot imagine the information that it will provide will be of anything other than limited value.

On a somewhat related note, presumably those members of the Armed Forces serving in South Africa (or anywhere else for that matter) in 1901 would not appear in the census. Can anyone confirm this or were special arrangements made?
E Yorks - Carver, Steels, Cross, Maltby, Whiting, Moor, Laybourn
W Yorks - Wilkinson, Kershaw, Rawnsley, Shaw
Norfolk - Carver, Dowson

Very specifically the censuses were of people actually resident on that night. People who were out of the country, for whatever reason were not included. Questions about tracing relatives who served in the various wars are frequent here and get answered over and over again - for instance:

Also there is much on the Beginners Board.
