« on: Thursday 06 July 06 06:57 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am looking to find a William HOLINESS who on the 5 Jan 1841 was sentenced to 7 years transportation at St Augustines but never left England till 1842 on the John Brewer

Would he be listed on the 1841 Census??

Hi Rodhill

Yes, prisons should have been included.

Can you give an idea of his age and where he was born please (in Kent?)

Have you seen the gaol calendars - they often give an indication of where the prisoner was to be held prior to transportation.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Rod

I don't think the hulks (vessels) were including in the 1841 census or at least the returns for them may not survive see http://homepage.ntlworld.com/hitch/gendocs/census.html

However, there are quarterly returns of convict hulks held at the National Archives, Kew, London see http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=253 - particularly the HO8 series

Searching the catalogue brings up one document for the "John Brewer" convict ship December 1841 - would your ancestor have been on that? I'm not sure what information the document would hold. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/

I'm not sure that convict ships were the same as prison/convict hulks - the latter stationary in and around the Thames estuary and not necessarily used for the transportation of prisoners :-\

You may well have made progress with this old request but, if not, prisoner 6905 William HOLNESS age 23 was convicted of stealing irons at the St Augustine Quarter Sessions 5 Jan 1841.  He was held on the hulk "Fortitude" at Chatham and left for the "John Brewer" 22 Nov 1841.
