Now, Janet Callander. We know her father was Robert and was living with her in 1851, as a widower. I don't think she was illegitimate. Again I think we have two Robert Callander's walking about. One certainly was married to Janet Lorimer. The other I now think was Janet's father and was married to a Mary XXX - Manson from Janet's death cert., although I'm not 100% on that.

I have found an Ebenezer Callander on the censuses. The name is unusual and the fact that it is also Callander stands out. His death cert. has his parents as Robert Callander (Farm Servant, as the 1851 Census entry with Janet) and mother Mary McDowell. This is Ebenezer and family in the 1851 Census, note he shows the same birthplace as the Robert Callander Snr that we have also in 1851 with Janet:

CALLANDER Agnes, daughter of Ebenezer Callander, age 12, b. Crossmichael Kb
CALLANDER David, son of Ebenezer Callander, age 5, b. Crossmichael Kb
CALLANDER Ebenezer, head, Blacksmith Master, age 36, b. Irongray Kbt
CALLANDER Jane, wife, age 36, b. Crossmichael Kb
CALLANDER Jane, daughter of Ebenezer Callander, age 1, b. Crossmichael Kb
CALLANDER Janet, daughter of Ebenezer Callander, age 3, b. Crossmichael Kb
CALLANDER Mary, daughter of Ebenezer Callander, age 7, b. Crossmichael Kb
CALLANDER Robert, son of Ebenezer Callander, age 10, b. Crossmichael Kb
TWINAME David, Blacksmith apprentice, age 17, b. Buittle Kbt

Address: Village of Clarebrand(863)/ Household No: 3/14/ Household No: 3/14

This is Ebenezer Callander's IGI entry which is correct in respect of the parents and death details:

Ebenezer Callender     Birth:  About 1815 Scotland
Death:  03 DEC 1891 Dumfries, Scotland
Parents: Father: Robert Callender  Mother: Mary McDowall

So, Ted, McDowell or Manson? Who knows at this stage! It's not unusual for people reporting deaths to get some of the names wrong, even children reporting the deaths of g/parents. Robert and Mary X probably had more children, I suppose this would be the way to go to try to verify the McDowell/Manson issue.

Regards.

Monica

1./ John Manderson dob C:-1754
2./ Betty  dob C:-1755
3./ John   dob C:- 1764
4./ Jannett  dob C:- 1765
5./ Jean       dob C:-1767
6./ Mary       dob C:- 1769
7./ Grizel      dob C:- 1771
8./ Isabel    27/10/1787

Looks like another back tracking over these details

In my family line I have a Margaret Beattie, age 23, and her 4 month old daughter Janet  visiting with a Marion Sproat on the 1851 census. I haven't done any research on the Beattie line as yet.  Janet married my great grandfather in 1870  and had 9 children.

Just wondering if this Beattie - Sproat  connection rings a bell with you.

Hi Jimbo.
The connection with Sproat at this time is through a marriage of MARY Beattie & Robert Sproat 31/5/1859 in Rerrick.Scotland.
He was born C:- 1830 in Auchencairn,(Dumfries) Scotland.

I do have  some family from this marriage

Hi Baldy,
I was just curious, noticing your Beattie - Sproat interests.   I don't know why Margaret was just visiting Marion Sproat 4 months after her baby was born. Was she related or what ?   I don't know anything yet on Margaret Beattie's parentage or if she is a sister to any of your Dumfries Beatties.  She was born in 1828 in Kirkmahoe, Dumfriesshire, and her daughter, Janet, was born Nov. 5, 1850 at Dumfries, Dumfriesshire. Janet took her father's name, Marchbank. She married James Proudfoot ( my great grandfather ) on Dec. 9, 1870 at Wamphray Manse and had 9 children.
Margaret Beattie and Samuel Marchbank were at the marriage of Janet and James but do not appear to be married.
I'm still working on my Proudfoot and Geddes lines.
If Margaret shows up on your tree in your search for relatives, please let me know.

Happy hunting,
Jimbo

Hi,

Just looking at this thread and noticed a reference to Mary Manson.
She must have married a few times I think.
The Mary Manson in my tree was born in Caithness about 1825 and Married John Smith. In 1861 she lived in Kirkbean with my G.G. Grandfather, William Smith and Agnes Wallace Smith. Agnes emigrated to Australia in the 1870s.

Just wondered if any of this was relevant or made any sense?

Cheers

Gary
