Harriet - Restore/color and date please
« on: Thursday 06 July 06 12:41 BST (UK) »
Hi hope someone can help me out with dating this.

Think this is a possible photograph of my GG grandmother Harriet Gibbons.  (wife of Richard) The info I have is she was born c1836 died around 1907.

Could someone help with approx. date of this photograph and possibly restore/color? Sorry about the image quality.

Would this fit the above dates, dress etc.  Not sure it is the same Harriet, as sent by a family member, that knows little more than me.

Would be grateful for any input or suggestions.  Am away later for a few days, but look forward to any replies on my return.

Many thanks

Cas

Hi Cas

As no-one has had a go at restoring this, I thought I would.  I am not very good yet, but hope to improve with practice.  I do not have the skills to fix the babies eyes, I thought they would be best left to look like he was sleeping, but could not add eyelashes, not up to that level yet!!  Hope you find some improvement in this and perhaps someone else can add the eyelashes to help the baby have his nap?

Regards

Lones

Thank you Lones, it looks so much better.  I really appreciate your time and effort, thank you for taking the time to do this for me.  :)

Could anyone help with the dating of the dress?  Do you think it could be 1860's this would fit in with what I know?

Many thanks

Cas

Hi Cas

Here is a restore for you. I constructed the baby's face using features from the mother and then belnding the layers by adjusting the opacity.

David
Please feel free to colour or improve for the benefit of the poster but an acknowledgement would be appreciated

Hi Cas  :)
Sorry, I didn't see your post sitting there unloved  ;)  I would have had a go earlier if I had.
The lady's hairstyle and clothes (what you can see of them) seem to date to the mid 1860s.  Could be 1863-1868 or so....or later, but she looks like she would have tried to keep up with the latest fashions, so I would say the date is pretty certain.
That would put the lady in her late 20s-early 30s if she is who you think she is...not sure that she looks that old though ???

Hi Prue, thank you for your reply.

The lady is more than very likely Harriet.  With the restoration of her and husband Richard (I posted on the same day) you can see that there is a pillar that is identical in both photographs.  I think possible both pics were together at some point ( pillar between them and they have prob been separated for the album)  The info I have had from Richard, due to the uniform, fits with the dates around the 1860's.  Also there were children born 1858, 1860, 63, 65, 69, 71, 73, 78, so this fits with early to mid 1860's.

Thanks for confirming it is probably about this time, all the dating stuff is a learning curve for me.

Glad to be of service Cas...they are lovely pictures and it's nice that you're able to identify them with a degree of certainty  :)  So many of our photos remain nameless, so it's always good to put a name to a face  :)
