Wet Nursing.
« on: Friday 07 July 06 22:52 BST (UK) »
As I understand it, a wet nurse is a woman who suckles (breast feeds) another womans child. I have found a "wet nurse" who is 67 years old. Is this physically possible? I personally don't think it is. Are there any medical experts out there who can advise on this?

Yes, it certainly is possible, especially if she has continually done it for lots of babies as the milk supply doesn't dissappear completely until about 12 months after stopping feeding and can be stimulated again.  I remember reading a book about it when I was pregnant but can't remember what it was called.  Anyway this is not the place to go into it too much, would cause offence to many people.  But I can well imagine a wet nurse could still be doing it at 67 if she has never stopped.

Dr Patricia Rashbrook, who has just given birth at the age of 63, is reputedly breastfeeding her new son - according to the BBC this morning!  She's not much younger than your lady.

well ! I stand corrected, it would seem it is perfectly possible for a 67 year old woman to be a wet nurse, even if it is a bit mind boggling. Don't think i'll be making a career move though.  ;D

Could the 67 year old now be a retired wet nurse but still using the description for "offical forms"?

Must admit that's a explanation that's easier on the imagination, Nanny Jean!

the woman in question appears in 1881 living with a young couple who have a 2 year old child and a 12 hour old baby, so I suppose she could also be a midwife ?
