Mark King, Rowde.....help please!

Has anyone got any ideas pls?
My great grandfather was Mark King b1863 in Rowde, Wiltshire. He married  Kate Stanley b1871 and they had 5 children. It is Mark i am interested in at the moment. It took me ages to work out that his mother Elizabeth b1832 in Alvediston wasnt married and he was illigitimate. Unfortunately on his marriage certificate his father isnt named. His mother never applied to the magistrates for money etc so no help there. His grandfather William was a Parish Clerk so maybe that is why?
Any ideas where i can go from here or is this just going to remain a mystery and i will never find out who his father was?

Hi again,
I'll add it to my list of thingd to do.   The WSRO have a 'Bastardy Book' which often names and shames, especially if the mother is 'on the Parish' or trying to get support from the father.   The records by no means cover all the illegitimate children but you may strike lucky.

Thanks very much for that........i have to say i dont think he was registered because as far as we can see Elizabeth, his mother, never claimed for any money which apparently they could do. This is bugging me so much for some odd reason that i feel frustrated because if i had known i couldve asked my grandmother before she died and a mystery wouldve been solved maybe? (does that make sense?) Ah the sands of time.  It is really nice of you to do this for me......

No problem Carla.   I think most families had this problem at some time, and in most cases it's almost impossible to establish parentage.

Hi Carla,

As you were informed by the WSRO there were no records of any charges etc.   Judging by the baptism records Mark was not the first little error of judgment 

Baptisms Alvediston
19 Aug 1832 Elizabeth dau of William and Mary King, Aston, Lab
16 Oct 1862 Mark bastard son of Elizabeth King, Alvediston, Spinster

Do you have Elizabeth's siblings and also her other children?

Hi thanks for that...great way to make a statement isnt it, saying Bastard son lol. I have found 9 children through various census although i think some died young. I thought i might have a go at seeing if i could find some of her siblings marriages when i get time  I have Mark's mother as Elizabeth as you saw and i know she did marry a Henry Louter (luter?) and have another child Sarah. Couldnt find any more. I also know Mark's grandfather via Elizabeth - William King. i dont know his grandmother though, wife of William although i believe it is Mary. To make it more complicated William the grandfather was born in Radnorshire, Wales. Not only am i stuck on that but now i need help on someone in ebbesbourne, Wiltshire. Any idea how i can get those details too (seeing as you are most helpful and i am begging)

further to this.....i have been looking and i cant find Mark registered on any of the BMD index. Obviously i must be doing something wrong? Not only that but although he apperas on the 1881 census he doesnt on the 1871 census. he would have been 8 so where was he? I only worked out who he was because it says stepson and where he was born in 1881. He is also my great grandfather.
Any ideas?
