Cornelious & Mary Maher....a Mystery??

Hope SKS can help.

In 1924 I can track Cornelious Maher b1874 Blackburn, Lancs travelling to the US to meet up with his wife Mary Elizabeth Maher in New Bedford, Mass.

Family tells us that Cornelious went to Canada, some say he joined the Mounties, and others say that he died in Canada...

Can someone please give me a point in the right direction?, any info about Cornelious or his wife will be most gratefully received.

Hi there,

I don't think that is your Cornelius.  There is a Cornelius Meyer in 1901 living in Wellseley with his parents and family, father being Jacob Meyer and when you check the ontario cemetery finding aid, the same family is buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Wellesley.

Have you contacted the Mounties?

I've tried to contact the Mounties...got nothing back in over 2 weeks....Is there a death register for Canada which Cornelious would be on??

Each Province has their own system, so not knowing what Province he went to it could get difficult.  For Ontario they death are public up to 1932 with a new year added.  Anything over that you have to send to the Registrar of the Province, Vital Statistics and proof of next of kin has to be made (it's a real pain).

Any idea what part of Canada he was rumoured to have gone? 

I would have thought you would have had a response from the Mounties by now.  Maybe send another email just in case it got lost.

Did he have any children and if so what are their names?

This is amazing!!...Thankyou so much, so he left New Bedford to go to Canada to fight, then returned back in 1924....but relatives also say that he died in Canada.

Looks like he signed up in Montreal, Quebec.  You can order his full military papers which will have alot more information in them.
