workhouses
« on: Wednesday 12 July 06 23:26 BST (UK) »
Hi, not sure if this is the corect place for this question or not.

An ancestor of mine is in the workhouse on the 1881 census her entry reads Frances Farmer wife of Jas a Gas Fitter, I noticed this on other entries, what does Jas mean?
her husband was a John Edward Farmer.

thanks Patrish.

Not from your neck of the woods I am afraid, they are part of my London, Stepney mob.

My 2 x gt aunt was Frances Louisa Ayrton, I have a marriage from the IGI in Stepney June 1856 to a John Edward Farmer, she was born in 1833.   Cant find on the 61 but found this on 71

John Farmer h m 37 Dock Labourer b Bethnal Green
Frances wife 37  Laundress b St Geo East
William son 10 b Stepney
Mary Ann dau 7        "
John son 5               "
Louisa 2 mths          "

Felt sure this was the right one, especially with Louisa her second name.

On the 81 I found a Frances Farmer in the workhouse aged 49 b st. Geo East but now its seem her husband was a James, so must be the wrong one. Cant seem to find any of the children in 81 either.

Patrish.
