1861 census lookup, Greenwich - COULDERY
« on: Thursday 13 July 06 01:44 BST (UK) »
Could someone please find Joseph COULDERY, age 12, in the 1861 census for Greenwich, Kent. His siblings were Harriett, Jane, and Francis.

[Update: July 15, 2006]

I found them in the index at Ancestry.com. The name was misspelled CONLDERY...

William Conldery  b. abt 1823 Kent, England
Jane Conldery  b. abt 1816 Oxfordshire, England
Harriett Conldery  b. abt 1845 Kent, England
Jane Conldery  b. abt 1847 Kent, England
Joseph Conldery  b. abt 1851 Kent, England
Francis Conldery  b. abt 1851 Kent, England
Emma Conldery  b. abt 1853 Kent, England

I'd like to get the rest of the household details. Will someone please look them up for me? From the source code for the Ancestry.com results page, it looks like they're somewhere on pages RG9/399 to RG9/402.

Hi

There were no other family members - just a 16 year old servant called Henry Major who was a butcher.

William Couldery is shown as a butcher employing 1 man and the family lived at 3 Blackheath Hill

I have notified the mis-spelling of the surname to Ancestry

Thanks very much Carole. Could you give me their ages and birthplaces too please? The free index only shows the county they were born in -- not the city or town.

It's interesting that they were at #3 Blackheath Hill.  In the 1851 census, Edward and Caroline Couldery were living at #3 Blackheath Hill, and Robert Couldery was a lodger at #7 Blackheath Hill (Edward and Robert were both butchers). In 1881, Francis (another butcher) and Emma Marthana Couldery were at #6 Blackheath Hill. If it's not too much trouble, could you see if any other Coulderys were living in Blackheath Hill in 1861? They seem to like that street.

Thanks.

Hi

William - Lewisham
Jane - Oxford
All children Greenwich

Just subtract the birthyear from 1861 to get their ages

You need to supply full 1851/1881 census details of the others - birthyears etc as Blackheath Hill seems to go on for several pages and you have to download each page to search which is quite time consuming - it's easier to use the index

Thanks Carole.  The reason I asked for their ages is that I found a discrepancy between the ages reported at 1837.com and the ages I calculate by subtracting the estimated birth year from 1861 at Ancestry.com.  In particular, Ancestry.com says that Francis and Joseph were twins born abt. 1851.  But 1837.com says Francis was 10 and Joseph was 12. I just wondered whether Ancestry.com reported their ages as the same or two years apart. I guess Ancestry's estimated birth year is a calculation based on the age, so they probably show the age as 10 for both of them.

Sorry about the lack of information in my Blackheath Hill request. I assumed you'd be able to search by address, or browse the neighbours as I can with the 1881 LDS CD set.

1851 - 3 Blackheath Hill, Greenwich
Edward COULDERY, Head, Marr, 38, b. Walmer, Kent; Butcher Master Employing 2 Men
Caroline COULDERY, Wife, Marr, 35, b. Lewisham, Kent
Charlotte COULDERY, Daur, Unm, 18, b. Lewisham, Kent
Richard PIPER, Serv, Unm, 23, b. Greenwich, Kent; Butcher's Servant
Edward WALTER, Serv, Unm, 22, b. Lewisham; Butcher's Servant
(According to the IGI, Edward WALTER married Charlotte COULDERY 1854 in Beckenham)

1851 - 7 Blackheath Hill, Greenwich
Robert KENNEDY, Head, Marr, 25, b. London, Middlesex; Stationer
Sarah A KENNEDY, Wife, Marr, 23, b. London, Middlesex
Emilia HUNT, Serv, Unm, 15, b. Bath; House Servt
Robert COULDERY, Lodr, Widower, 70, b. Greenwich, Kent; Butcher

1881 - 6 Blackheath Hill, Greenwich
Francis COULDERY, Head, Marr, 30, b. Greenwich, Kent; Butcher
Emma Marthana COULDERY, Wife, Marr, Marr, 32, b. Braintree, Essex
Frank COULDERY, Son, Unm, 4, b. Greenwich, Kent
Harry L. COULDERY, Son, Unm, 3, b. Greenwich, Kent
Herbert W. COULDERY, Son, Unm, 2, b. Greenwich, Kent
Eliza KINGSLOTT, Serv, Unm, 19, b. Bramshott, Surrey; Housemaid
Ada ROFF, Serv, Unm, 14, b. Poplar, Middlesex; Nurse (Domestic)

Actually, Couldery is a pretty unique surname so it might be easiest to just search the index for all Coulderys. I tried a free search at Ancestry.com and found only 23 Coulderys in the entire 1861 England Census.

The trouble with searching the index at Ancestry.com is that the surname is often misspelled. For example, 1837.com reports 45 Coulderys in the 1861 census -- twice as many as Ancestry.com reports. So the other 22 must be either misspelled or missing.

I'm grateful for all information you can provide on any Coulderys as I believe that they're all closely connected. I'm doing sort of a one-name study on them and have already been able to connect a large percentage of the Coulderys I've found.

Thanks for your help.

Excellent! Some time ago I found a marriage of Jane Couldery and Thomas Jeans but didn't know where they fit into the tree.  The niece, Ellen Jeans, is the clue I needed. She was the daughter of Thomas and Jane (source: IGI) and so Jane must be the brother of Edward Gardiner Couldery. Now if only I could find the parents of Jane and Edward Gardiner!

Thank you so much!
