Photo dating question - Melbourne, Aust
« on: Thursday 13 July 06 04:13 BST (UK) »
Hi
I would appreciate hearing views on the approximate dates these two photos were taken in Melbourne, Aust. I am hoping the mutton chops and distinctive coat styles can pin the time period down a bit. I don't have the originals so I don't know what type of card they were on. But there is a note with the first saying - Alfred Winter photographer Theatre Royal Melbourne - and with the second - Bachelder and Oneil Melbourne.

Actually I might have partially answered my question myself as I have found via Google that Perez Batchelder from Boston USA went into partnership with Daniel O'Neill in 1857 in Melbourne and this lasted until 1865. Is this in keeping with the clothing in the second photo?

And adding to my own post again - does anyone think this is the same gentleman as in the second photo below? And when might this be dated? I don't even know the place or photographer on this one.

Well done Jackie, that's definitely Victoria and Albert in the third pic posted.  Collecting cartes-de-visite of famous personalities/royalty was very popular, a bit like collecting cigarette and bubble-gum cards more recently.

Kath, the 1860s would be a perfect date for both of your other pictures.  The poses and very formal setting are typical of that time.

Hi again,

According to this website: http://www.rootschat.com/links/0nb/
"Alfred Winter (c. 1837-1911) trained with P.M.Batchelder in Melbourne ... owning his own Bourke St. photographic studio between 1860-67.  At some time between 1867 and 1870, Alfred Winter moved to Hobart. "

So there's your 1860s date confirmed  :)

Cheers

You know I thought that myself and then wondered why it was in the collection of family photos. :-\

And thanks for all your thoughts on the other photos.

That's what I thought Jackie

The likeness is amazing if they aren't Queen Victoria and Prince Albert
