Help please reading name
« on: Thursday 13 July 06 20:25 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

Can anyone help me read my ancestor's wife's name on his death certificate?

I  know he was called William Brown Bett and he was a Foreman in the Permanent Way Department, but I can't read the widow's name.  Can anyone help, as it will help me greatly in finding his marriage certificate  ???

Cheers,
Clare

Hi Steve and Rob,

I think it is the word at the bottom that is causing all my confusion ???  I am not sure if it is part of her name or not...  the only problem is that I can't find a marriage for William Bett to any Campbell.  I am getting very confused!

Cheers,
Clare

I would say Campbell

Do you have a year for their marriage?

Hi Carol,

I don't have a year for the marriage.  I didn't even know he had married until I saw the death cert.  I think I have found him on the 1901 census where he is noted as being single, so he probably married between 1901 and 1931.  Scotland's People shows marriages from 1855 to 1930, and I can't find a marriage for William Bett (or Beat or Bell, as it has sometimes been mistranscribed) to a Campbell.  Just to be on the safe side, I have also checked from 1882 onwards, as he would have been 16 then.

From this basis, I had assumed that the Campbell was a middle name and the 'undechiperable' word on the bottom line is her maiden name.  However, I can't even find a marriage for a William Bett to a Mary that looks even close.

All help gratefully received  :)

Cheers,
Clare

After sleep and another look it is starting to make more sense that the middle name is Campbell and the surname is the one that is totally indecipherable.

They could have married in England so it might be worth a try looking for him in those marriage registers. (will see if I can find anything)
