Balford - mystery
« on: Friday 14 July 06 02:31 BST (UK) »
Can anyone do a look up for me in the parish registers on Balford for a girl with the name of Bridget born around 1847 and let me know what you find.
Sorry to be so vague but here is the problem.
I find a Bridget Sutherland on the 1871 and 1881 Census in South Shields married to a John Sutherland. She states in both censuses a birthplace of Belford, Northumberland.
I cannot find their marriage, they have a son Henry born 1863 according to the census, but I can't find him either.
The only marriage I can find that is a possibility is in 1869 a Bridget Gallagher, but I cannot find a Bridget Gallagher born in Balford.
Any pointers would be appreciated
The ref for the 1871 census is RG10/5037 folio 36, pg 27

Thanks
Lesley

Is this your Bridget on the 1861?

Indexed as Bridget Gollobor aged 16, born Bellshill, Northumberland.

On the actual image it looks like Bridget Golloher (which I would read to actually be Galla(g)her) , the birthplace has a line through it and is very hard to read, but could very easily be Belford.

Ref:  RG9/3779, Folio 40, page 7 (parents are on previous page)

Thanks June and Debbie.

I tend to agree that is her on the 1861 Census.
But it poses yet more questions as I cannot find this young ladies birth or that of her son.

Any of her children's birth certificates would give you her maiden name

e.g.

Births Sep 1871

SUTHERLAND  Margaret Ann     S. Shields  10a 723

The problem with that is that Belford is a Registration district in its own right and therefore these Bridget's can be ruled out.

Hi,

How about this birth,

Bridget GALLAUGHAR  Dec Q  1842  Belford  v.25  p.231

In 1851 HO107/2402  f.605  p.15  I can see what looks like the same family found by Debbie in 1861, transcribed as and looks like GALLIFOR, this time Bridget is 8 and born Bothel?

Let me know if you need the details.

Regards
Daisy
