Cornish immigrants to South Africa
« on: Sunday 16 July 06 08:17 BST (UK) »
Hello Rutti,
Thanks for all that information with all the websites relating to South Africa.  I have been through them all.  However, the Genealogy World website gave a list of British Settlers - i.e. Surname List with numbers relating to "Page".  Esme Bull - Aided Immigration from Britain to South Africa 1857-1867, transcribed by Ellen Stanton - I have found some names which I think may be relevant but how on earth do I check those Pages.  There is no link at all.  I wondered if you were able to shed some light on it for me.

Many thanks

Hi there
Who are you looking for - I have access to other databases as well. I think there was a Cornish migration scheme to Kimberley. Let me see what I can find for you - as much detail as possible.
Thanks
Ruth

Hi,

I wonder if you could help me aswell.

I am looking for James Brewer who emigrated to South Africa between 1881 and 1891 (He was on the Cornish census for 1881 but not for 1891). He was from St Ive, Liskeard, Cornwall and was born in 1865. He was a miner in Cornwall and became a Gold Miner in South Africa. He had returned home by 1896 as he was married in Cornwall in that year. But I believe he returned once or twice more to South Africa, before he died in 1911 (in Cornwall).

I hope this information might help in locating my great grandfather.

Most interesting - I have a nephew who is interested in his Cornish descent in South Africa. His name is Friggens. They were also miners - does that name appear on any of those lists?
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.
