Frederick Broad
« on: Monday 17 July 06 18:58 BST (UK) »
Hello all,
I wonder if some one could help me please. This is the first time i,ve ever put a message on here so please be patient with me!!
My g grandfather was Frederick Broad born around 1860 in East Challow. On his marriage cert in 1883 his father is also Frederick (deceased) sawyer and my Frederick was a carpenter. I can find a census for 1881 which fits except the head is called William (he died 1881) he has a grandson called Walter living there and in the 1891 census my Frederick has a nephew called Walter living with him and his wife Fanny and my grandfather Hubert.  I can't find a birth for My Frederick so wonder if you have any suggestions as to what to do next so I can prove whether or not this is the right family.
Thank you     Wendy

Hi Wendy

Welcome to Rootschat!  :)

In order to help you, I am going to ask you questions, rather than answering yours!!

I can find the same family as the one you describe on the 1861 census and the father is still called William.  I wonder whether there was a simple mix-up on the marriage certificate?

Along the same lines, presumably you got his place of birth from the 1891 census?  Are you certain that this is the right Frederick?  There are not many to choose from, so perhaps his children are the means you have used to identify him?

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hello
Thank you for your reply and your welcome. Perhaps it won't be so scary now!!
My first place that I looked was on 1901 census and I already knew the names of Hubert and Fanny my great aunt and others in the family and I knew he married again  as he was widowed when his wife Fanny gave birth to his daughter Fanny they were then living in Childrey the village where my dad came from.
I hope that explains a bit -
Wendy

Good!  8)

In 1861 there are only two Frederick BROADs born in Berkshire and one of those was born in Newbury in 1847 - the other must be your guy!  The father's occupation fits, so I would be quite confident that he is yours.

So we need a birth certificate.  Have you looked at the complete indexes to find Frederick?

Let us know if you need earlier censuses.

There!  You jumped right in, and it didn't hurt a bit!!  You are on a roll...  :D

Thanks for your help
I will have a look there quarter by quarter, I looked before for a birth around the time I thought it might be but I couldn't see one.   I noticed on the marriage cert that Frederick made an x for his mark so perhaps he knew his father as Frederick and didn't know his name was William if he didn't know how to read either.

I will let you know if I get a birth certificate and then I might need your help with earlier censuses then.

Wendy

Hello again

Just to let you know I have got the birth cert for Frederick and it does tie up with William BROAD.  I have paid to subscribe to ancestry so I will have a good look at the censuses (I always want to put censi!)

Thank you for the link you gave me as I think I was only looking at the partial ones before, this time I went through month by month and found him. Hopefully i'm learning all the time!!!

Well done Wendy

I would want to satisfy my own curiosity about Walter - finding his father should mean you can tie him to William - if you don't get back before 1841!

There is always the IGI if you run out of censi (!) - perhaps someone with Berkshire knowledge can tell you what records you would need.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Yes I wanted to know about Walter. I think I have found him on 1901 living as a lodger in Reading. I wonder if he was Frederick's unmarried sisters son as she was 16 around the time he was born. I will have to put him on my list of "to do".
I started off just wanted to know their names but like everyone else I wan't to know a bit more now.
Thanks again
Wendy

Hi,

From the parish registers for East Challow, there's these baptisms.

26/10/1856 (born sep 3) Broad, Frederick, s Thirza, single woman

16/7/1858 Broad, Frederick, s William & Hannah, sawyer

These are the only 2 Frederick Broads baptised in East Challow between 1855-1865.

If you anything else from East Challow, feel free to PM me.

Best wishes
Paula
