Can anyone date these portraits please
« on: Monday 24 July 06 13:44 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone give me an idea as to when these portraits were painted from the style of the portraits, or from the clothes or hairstyles.

Many thanks,
Richard.

Hi Richard,

Going by the style of dress and hair I would date this from 1837 to at least 1850 but leaning more to 1837 to 1843.
There is not much detail to go on but, with the near off the shoulder top of the woman's dress along with the side ringlets and plaited bun (this style of hair was fashionable from 1837 to 1843 but was retailed by some until 1850) + the style and length of the male sitters hair and side whiskers coupled with the high white shirt with collar silk (the collar stock worn by men was replaced by silk sometime between 1840 and 1845) leads me to this date line. Perhaps Pru can give abetter idea for the time period as I know through her postings that she is well informed on the Victorian period.

Hi Richard

What a lovely picture! I'm in complete agreement with old rowley about it dating from the Victorian period.  The hair style is a real clue in this case.  The hair style in the picture reflects the style depicted on the early coinage of Queen Victoria from circa 1838 - especially the "Young Head & Gothick" coins.

Hi Richard  :)

Well, I certainly am no expert but I do think these portraits date from around the turn of the 18th/19th centuries - the Regency period (agreeing with Annie here  ;D).

The fashions (ie hair and clothes that you can see) seem almost to come out of a Jane Austen film set (eg Pride and Prejudice), esp in the male - ie neck cravat, high jacket collar, hairstyle (a slightly less elaborate Beau Brummel).

Attaching a photo found of a Regency lady - note the hair with the ringlets around the ears....

Hi All,

Many thanks for all of your responses. Interesting that there appear to be opinions supporting three different date ranges. One of the three date ranges fits very well with information I have obtained about this couple, but I won't say which one yet, in case anyone else has an opinion on the possible date of the portraits.

Richard.

Hi Richard,
I think the folks with their money on the Regency are correct.  I'm sure that's Elizabeth and Mr Darcy!  ;D ;D ;D
I'd say early 19th century, probably the first decade or so.
One thing though - Richard, if you own these pictures, you need to have them removed from the poor-quality  mounts they are in, checked by a conservator, and re-mounted in conservation-quality materials.  You can see the mat burn and foxing on the pictures, caused by the acid pouring out of the mounting materials.
Cheers
Prue
