41, 61 (poss 71) lookup - Gower
« on: Tuesday 25 July 06 14:55 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'd be really grateful if someone could look up Samuel GOWER b.1815 Essex

In 41 he should be married. He then remarried so in the 61 lookup...he should be with wife Jemima (elizabeth), and children.

If they can be found, and there is time, please look up samuel in the 71.

Thanks

Where in Essex would help?

In 41 he should be married.
If you are aware of this marriage who was it to and what year and where?  Were any children born? would any be living with them in the 1841 census

in the 61 lookup...he should be with wife Jemima (elizabeth), and children.
Who is Elizabeth? Where was Jemima born? When and where were they married ? What children? names, dobs and birthplaces please

If they can be found, and there is time, please look up samuel in the 71.
If you know where his birthplace was its easier to trace somebody backwards than it is forwards so it would be preferable to start with this census - IF you know his date of death.  Have you found him in the 1881 census and can you give full details.

Sorry to ask so many questions but you seem to know such a lot about the family and all these details help to identify him, Essex being a county he could be anywhere.

Hiya,

Well i have this census thanks to another rootschatter:

1851 Census
HO107/1481 Folio 88 Page 20
St Martin in the Fields, Charing Cross
4 Princes Court

Samuel GOWER, Head, Mar, 35, Laborer, Essex Upminster
Jamima GOWER, Wife, Mar, 34,     , Surrey Lambeth
William GOWER, Son,   , 13, can't make out the occupation, Middx St Anns
Henry GOWER, Son,  , 11, son , ditto
Rebecca GOWER, Daur,   , 10, daur, ditto
John GOWER, Daur,  , 7, son, ditto
William COOK, Son in Law,  ,11, step son, ditto
George COOK, Son in Law,  , 10,. ditto, ditto
Henry COOK, Son in Law, 8,  , 8, ditto, ditto
Edward COOK, Son in Law,   , 5, ditto, ditto

Q1)There he was born Upminster
Q2)He should be married but i can't find it on freebmd because i think they married before 1837 (just!)
Q3)  Her name on the 51 census is Jemima (just on freebmd it says an Elizabeth Jemima married William Cook....so she may appear as either).
Q4)  I've just looked for him on the 1881 census but i dont think with any luck - the only samuel gower was b.Bungay, Norfolk.

I hope this helps and clears a few things up!

1861 a possible John
York Place, Westminster St Martins in the Fields, Charing Cross
Elizabeth White Head W 64 Laundress Kent Margate
John Gower Boarder Un 19 Printer Middx St Martins in the Fields
William Suffry Boarder 15 Printer        "                "
RG9/57  Folio: 58    Page: 20

1841 City and Liberties of Westminster, Parish of St Anns
Samuel Gower 25 Porter N
Sarah 30 N
William 4 Y
Henry 2 Y
HO107/730/7 Strand St Anne Westminster Folio 50 Page 28

Seems Samuel has been married twice - maybe you will be able to find the Samuel/Jemima marriage after all, since it must be somewhere between 1841 and 1851.

The occupation next to William on the 1851 census states Laundress, although I do wonder whether this is continued down from Jemima's occupation above by mistake.

1861 Jemima seems to have reverted to her previous name - unless one of the children gave all names in and it was assumed to be her name also.

4 Princes Court, St Martins in the Fields, Middlesex
Jemima Cook Head Widow 45 Laundress Middlesex St Clement Dane
William Son Unm 21 Porter                           " "
Henry Son Unm 18     " " St Ann Soho
Edmund Son Unm 15 Errand Boy " "

1861 - the most likely William - does printing run in the family? see John above!
