Slater ------ Galway.
« on: Tuesday 01 August 06 14:31 BST (UK) »
The following family are shown on the 1851 census at St Pancras Marylebone.
Peter Slater, 40, Head, Labourer, Galway
Mary Slater, 34, Wife, Galway
Thomas Slater, 14, Son, Galway
Elizabeth Slater, 12, Daur, Scholar, Galway
Edward Slater, 9, Son, Birkenhead
Maria Slater, 6, Daur, Birkenhead
Michaell Slater, 8 months, Son, London
.

I was wondering if some kind person would be able to help with any information on Peter and Mary, and their first 2 children. Also any more Slater's that may be at Galway. Many thanks  :) Lyn

Hello Lyn,

I looked at both the 1796 Flax Growers List and the 1855 extracts of Griffiths Valuation
for Galway. There are no Slaters listed. I don't suppose you know Mary's maiden name?

Hi Christopher

Thank you for looking. I don't know Mary's maiden name. I presume she married in Ireland as the first 2 children were both born Galway.

Happy New Year to you  :D Lyn

The information you are looking for (marriage, births) is before civil registration in Ireland. In order to find church records (if they exist) you need to know the family's religion and where they lived and then start checking church records in the area.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Lyn,

What about the children's christian names. Could one be a surname?
Joyce would be a good example as it's a common surname in Co. Galway.

Hi Lyn

You should be able to get the youngest childs birth certificate, as he was born  after 1837. That would give you Marys maiden name.

good Luck

Richard Slater from Carrabane Parish (modern Kilconierin-Clostoken Parish) served in the Royal Marines from 1853, before being invalided a decade later. There are no Slaters living in the parish today.
