Census Lookups Please
« on: Sunday 06 August 06 18:11 BST (UK) »
I am trying to track down a :
Catherine Bailey Griffin, born approx 1881 in Guildford

She is living with relatives on the 1891 census.

I believe she married in 1897 in Guildford to either James Henry or Thomas Sullivan (from Free BMD listings).

Does anyone see any sign of her on the 1901 census under either Henry or Sullivan as surname??

Many thanks for any help on this one!! ???

Hi Kylie,
I've checked 1901 using her details & then Henry or Sullivan as her surname with no results.  I also tried different spellings of Catherine...still no luck.  All I found was a Catherine JONES born Guildford, husband, William living in Walthamstow, Essex.
You could try the free BMD index on Ancestry.co.uk to see if a marriage of a William Jones same quarter, date & registration district & ref. numbers cross references with your Catherine Jones.  As FreeBMD is not complete, it's likely that all the male names on that page have not yet been entered.
Of course if you ordered the certificate it would solve the problem, but perhaps you're trying to check before you do so  ;)

Kylie,
I'd like to help you, but first can you please confirm the details that you have provided.  I have looked at the BMD listings for the marriage and can find a marriarge for Catherine Griffin in Greenwich (not Guildford) but can't find a marriage in Guildford.  The two males listed on the same page as the Catherine Griffin are Thomas Sullivan and James Henry HUNT (not James Henry).  Can you confirm that Catherine Griffin was born in Guildford in 1881 and who she was living with in the 1891 census?

Regards

Hi There,

Catherine's birth was found on a parish transcript for me (no sign on the BMD) at being 1881 in Guildford- Catherine Bailey GRIFFIN.

Her mother (Katherine Sparks Griffin) died in Hackney in 1885. Her father Augustus Wood Griffin remarried in 1886 in Guildford - I havn't tracked down to whom.

On the 1891 census she is listed as Carrie, living with the Hollins family (aunt Ellen and uncle), her brother Percy, and grandfather James Lambert.

I havn't been able to trace her under GRIFFIN after 1891, so presumed she married.....

Any help would be wonderful!!!

Kylie,
There is a marriage for Augustus Wood Griffin on FreeBMD.  Dec Q 1886 Guildford (2a 133)

I'll dig around some more this afternoon,

jane

Kylie,
In 1891 her father, Augustus was in Stoke Newington, London.  He was 38, waiter inn, born Lynn, Norfolk.  His new wife is Sarah age 30 born Aldgate, London.
I noticed from the 1891 census that Carrie & brother, Percy were with their relatives in Slaugham, Sussex.
In 1901 her brother, Percy is a boarder with a Henry & Eliza Shinbrole, florist gardener at Church Cottage, Church Rd, Woking, Guildford, Sry.  RG13/597/134/23.
Percy GRIFFIN  boarder  single  22  carter on farm  b. Woking Sry.
Of Carrie in 1901 there is no sign & I've tried all sorts of tricks to find her  ;)
I did find a possible marriage on FreeBMD;
Catherine B. GRIFFIN married Arthur J. Johnson, Southwark Sep. Q 1912 (1d 121)  She would have been about 30, so very plausible.
Do you have the day & month of her 1881 baptism?

Hi
Not adding much to this one and there is now a Sussex connection but Guildford is not in Sussex so you may get more information by using the Surrey board.   You may find it helfpul to search the full BMD index which is available free om www.ancestry.co.uk.  Make sure you choose the full version not the copy of FreeBMD which is also on that site.
Andrea - being a bit pedantic!

Kylie,
I've been through the BMD index on Ancestry, all quarters for 1881 & 1882.  I only found this birth registration;
Catherine Griffin Q2 1881, St. Saviour (1d 85)

Looking at the 1881 census of the family at Woking, it's evident that Catherine was born after the 3/4/1881 (the night the census was taken) It also occurred to me that she might have been born & therefore registered in a place other than Guildford but baptised in Guildford.  Was the transcript for a baptism?

:D ;DJane - Thank you!! Thank you!! ;)

I could not find Carrie/Catherine at all, but someone on a Norfolk message board said they found her on a births transcript for Guildford....could indeed have been a baptism, and her birth actually elsewhere.  Was the birth in St Saviour for Catherine, or Catherine B??

A birth in St Saviour would seem to make sense, as the family obviously had some connections in the London area (Katherine Griffin died in Hackney and Augustus living in Stoke Newington). ??? ???

Brother Percy died in 1906 - frustrating that there is no sign of Carrie in 1901, but this family seems to have been so far flung, I guess she could have been anywhere in south east england!!

Can I ask - were there any children living with Augustus and Sarah in 1891....and any sign of them in 1901??

Jane - many many thanks for all your help on this one!! I am really struggling with this family - they just won't stay put!!
