WW1
« on: Sunday 31 October 04 17:38 GMT (UK) »
I am not sure if I am the right message board for this query but researching military sites is new to me and I'm confused!
I am searching for more details on a Louis Charles Lancaster
The only information I have is a entry for a medal certificate which states that he was in the Mombasa Marine Defence Force as a Marine Inspector.
The theatre of War was British East Africa and German East Africa in 1914/15
The medal was the British Victory Star.
I would be very grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction to find out more about this entry. There was a Louis Charles Lancaster in my husbands family and I have been unable to trace him after the 1891 census when he was 18.

It sounds like your Louis emigrated to Kenya sometime between 1891 and 1900. That is why he would not appear on the 1901 census.
When the Great War broke out he was already 43 so he was not likely to have returned to Britain to enrol in the Forces. There was some action of a naval type on Lake Tanganyika between British Colonial Forces and the Germans who actually had a armed steamer there that they had reassembled on site. You may look in good library for detals and find him mentioned.
The white population of Kenya was not great back then, a handful of people, but you will not find information easy to come by. If he is not a direct ancestor but only a blood relation of your husband then I suggest you put this on the back burner and get on with other ancestors.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.
