Back to Seaforth Highlanders again - Please help
« on: Monday 07 August 06 16:44 BST (UK) »
I have found some information on the web about a soldier I think might be the one I am missing.  I just wondered if anyone has any information about him that would help me confirm it.  I know you have looked for me before but I think I have his service number now:

2028 James Bunch, Sergeant in the 42nd Highlanders

He appears on all his children's marriage certificates as deceased so must have died before 1866 and the last one was born in Stirling in 1855.

He married in 1841 Sarah Carr in Aberdeen, had children born in Aberdeen (1842) Malta (1843,1846) Bermuda (1849) Montrose (1850) Perth (1853) and Stirling (1855).  That is the last I have found of him.

This is a vain hope that adding a service number would help, but i do understand if there is no more information out there.

Thanks for reading this.

Sorry Annie, it was hard thinking of what information to give so people didn't search for what I already had, and I didn't want to make it too long and boring!

Thanks I have those from before from you, it is more the man himself, and particularly where he died as there seems to be no record of it.  Some time between 1855 and 1866.

Do you remember the wonderful obit for the Trumpeter Garen found for me, well that says he was a Sergeant in the Black Watch during the Crimean War, which would have been just after his last child which makes me think he could have died there or from injuries received there, but there is no record on the Casualty lists but he doesn't appear on Scotland's People either.

I will probably never know but just wanted to ask again now I think I have his number in case it brings forth any more info.  I really didn't mean for you to have to re-look for me, I am really sorry.

Thanks Annie. :)

Jemima is the grand-daughter of this James I am looking at now and is the daughter of the State Trumpeter's brother Adam who was a Drum Major in the 42nd.

Trumpeter James and Drummer Adam were both  born in Malta and Adam must have returned with his regiment to repeat history!

I have been on 1837Online and checked the Army and Consular deaths on there, is that where I would look for a GRO overseas death?  I couldn't find anything although I know there is more than one Bunch death overseas - have I missed something?

You can order overseas certificates on-line in the same way as for events in the UK !

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

You can either register or select "Guest Login".

It helps if you have the reference but they will look for you !! you might check here ( just in case !!  ::) ) or 1837 !!

I've just had a look through the Crimea medal roll for the 42nd Highlanders and can't see a James Bunch listed, sergeant or otherwise.

There is however a Private James Bunch with the 42nd during the Indian Mutiny, 1857-59.

Thanks Neil, I think that is 4282 which is the Trumpeter, the son of the James that is eluding me!  Thanks for looking.

Annie, I have re-checked the GRO, Scotland's People and 1837Online but there is nothing there.  I also checked the last birth and he doesn't appear as deceased.  His wife appears on the 1861 Census in Forfar and she is down as married as though he is still alive then.  I am obviously not meant to know what happened to him.

Thanks for helping me think it through again  - I have been going over and over it since March so was thinking I must be missing something obvious!
