JENKINS Neath Public House
« on: Tuesday 08 August 06 14:52 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information on Jenkin Jenkins born about 1798  married to Ann? . Jenkin Jenkins was a cordwainer  and in the Slaters Directory for 1858 he was the landlord of "The House Of Lords" in Old Market Street, Neath. Any suggestions about finding info on the public house and J. Jenkins and family would be appreciated.

Prue.

  Hello Prue,
I think this is your family on the 1851 census,

        Jenkin Hd 53yrs cordwainer
        Ann     Wi 48Yrs brickmaker ???
        Jane    D   21Yrs brickmaker
        Ann      D   16Yrs Milliner
        Lydia    D    15Yrs
        Elizabeth D  8Yrs

        All born in Neath.

I  think if you try the library in Neath they have a file with all the names of the pubs aand I think the publicans because one of my relitives kept the George and Dragon in Water street  about that time.  Hope this is of some help.           Margaret

Thank you Cas and Margaret. This looks the right family as Jenkin Jenkins occupation is cordwainer on Elizabeth's marriage certificate. Elizabeth is 8 years old in 1851 census and she is 23  on her marriage certificate in 1865. So that all ties in well. I shall try your suggestion of contacting the library for information about the public house.  I appreciate the help from you both.

Hi Prue, you may already have this

1861

RG9 Piece 4086 Folio 93 Pg 31

Old Market Street (does not name specific pub next to name)

All born Neath

Jenkin Jenkins 60 hd, Cordwainer & Publican
Ann Jenkins 58 wife
Elizabeth Jenkins 18  un, Dressmaker

So this ties the census together, and they are still there in 1861.  Also on the 1861 'Water Street' (where they were in 1841) is just before 'Old Market Street', this seems to be mostly public houses, so he may possibly have moved to a different pub, or it could be renamed.  Just a thought.

I looked through Old Market Street and could not find the pub you mentioned, although that is to say the enumerator may have ommitted it.

Prue, on the 1881 census I`ve found your Lydia I think at, 23, Old Road, Coedfrank, Skewen.

    Rees Hughes Hd 45yrs Warfman
    Lydia              W 45yrs
    JENKIN            s  18yrs minor
    Phillip              s   15yrs minor
    ANN                 D   13yrs

    Edward            s   9yrs
    Thomas            s   3yrs

Her age is correct from the previous census and to name her first son and only daughter  after her parents I,m sure this must be her, tryBMD to see if her marriage is on there,,,Margaret
