ancestry.com
« on: Thursday 10 August 06 16:07 BST (UK) »

I suscribe to ancestry.co.uk. My English born Grandfather lived and died in America with his second wife who I would like to find out more about.

On ancestry.com there is social security info about her (which I cannot access as I only have ancestry uk).

My question is: what info am I likely to find as I already have her birth date, death date and the city where she died. (I don`t know where she was born or married or any other details about her)?

You would get -

First and Last Name
Birth Date
Death Date
Last Known Residence
Social Security Issue State and SS Number

Many local libraries now have free access to ancestry.com, although I don't know if all counties provide this service.

The LDS site www.familysearch.org has some social security stuff on it.
I found a relative who died in 1969 in California there....luckily she has a rare name  ;D

Thank you - Carol, Stephen, avm228 for replying.

I think I am just going to have to search for a marriage certificate between my Grandfather and his second wife to find out who she was. Difficult as I have no maiden name or country of birth for her and no clue as to date or country of the marriage - only that it was probably sometime between 1931 and 1951.

Why don't you post some details(her name and date of death) here, and maybe one of us will have access to the info you need?

Thank you Carol.

my grandfather:Christopher Charles TOLLIT b. 09 Sept 1899 Derby, England.
                                                                      d.  01 June 1951 NY, USA.
My mother was born in 1931 in England to his 1st wife.

Death notice in The Times Wed 06 Jun reads:On Jun I 1951 suddenly at Bayshore New York, Christopher Charles loved husband of Marjorie and eldest son of the late PK Tollit and of Mrs Tollit of Moulsford Berks in his 52nd year. Funeral took place at Church of Heavenly Rest New York City 11am Tues Jun 5th.

So I know from these details that this is definately my Grandfather.

My grandfather`s 2nd wife: SSDeath Index: Marjorie Tollit(married name)
                                                                      b. 28 Nov 1901
                                                                      d. 01 Nov 1981
                                                                      number issued New York
                                                                      death residence localities
                                                                       New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana
there is also the Social Security number

Not very much to go on, but you never know!...

YOu could order her ss record.  It would have her parents names and birth date and place she worked. Residence at time of application for SS#.

I have ordered them beofre and gotten some great data. More than you think. I rember it costs about 27 dollars for a copy.

If you know the cemetery  in which your grandfather was buried, you might be able to contact them and get information on who is buried in or near his lot.  Cemetery records include birth, pob, death, dod, parents if known, and spouse.
