Help I'm Stuck with the HENDRYS!!
« on: Thursday 10 August 06 18:59 BST (UK) »
Hi All,
This is driving me mad!!  >:(
I have received a certificate which gives my GG Grandmas father as William J Hendry he was married to Susan and they had my GG grandma Alice Elizabeth, so far so good!
That was in 1891 by the way, however in the 1901 census they were living with their grandaughter Alice M aged 4 she is Alice Maud - but who are her parents??
I can find no sign of William in 1881 unless he was aboard the Devon vessel (he was a fisherman though!!?) as R M Hendry.

Can anyone help please??!!  ??? ??? ;)

thank you

I guess the only way to know for certain who Alice M's parents were is to buy the Cert :-

Births Mar 1897
Easter  Lilian Kate    King's L.  4b 339
Gant  Frederick Robert     King's L.  4b 339
Hendry  Alice Maud      King's L.  4b 339
Hitchcock  Ernest Henry     Kings Lynn  4b 339
Limber  Nellie     King's L.  4b 339

or find who she married via the 1901 census - Bullman or Gathergood !

Marriages Dec 1898
Bullman  William    King's L  4b 953
Gathergood  Charles Edward     Kings Lynn  4b 953
Hendry  Alice      Kings Lynn  4b 953
Parfrement  Elizabeth     Kings Lynn  4b 953

See later post for correct marriage.

Oh good eye Scropton,

Just as you were posting that I was checking for marriages and I found:

William James Hendry
Jun Qtr 1872 Kings Lynn 4b 609

Among possible spouses:  Sarah Thomison Howard

So my guess would be that they are indeed the same couple as 1891, but William is switching between his two names.  Now what happened to Emma??  Hmmm...  of to death indexes...

MJP

Edit: oh wait, but that doesn't explain the switch from Sarah to Susan  :-\  Still think it likely they are the same though...

hmmmm nothing obvious ... a William Bowman married to an Alice (23), oldest kid 4 .... possible ....but not a mistran.

Cant find Mr Gathergood at all, loadsa Gathercoles ....

The fact that Alice M is shown as Hendry with g'parents could be the enumerators mistake .... but also could be illegitimate ... but lets see what else we find ..

and there is only 1 Alice in earlier census years ... also time to check death indices I feel ... no result.

From FreeBMD,

An Emma Hendry died in Kings lynn Dec Qtr 1881 at age 1.  Looks like a possible for baby Emma.  Another Emma Hendry also died in Kings Lynn in 1876 age 1, so perhaps the baby on 1881 census was their second daughter named Emma?

There are 4 other Hendry children who died in the Kings Lynn district at about age 1, in 1882, 1883, 1891, 1893.  So unless there was another Hendry family around, it looks as if William/James and Sarah/Susan had rather unfortunate luck  :(

subee, is it possible that Alice Maud is Alice Elizabeth's illegitimate daughter, whom she has the year before she marries?  It certainly looks like that would add up.  Whether Alice E. actually left Alice M. in the care of her grandparents permanently following her marriage, or if she just happened to be at their house on census night is another matter...
