Should I continue or stop here??
« on: Saturday 12 August 06 19:31 BST (UK) »
Hi Rootschatters,

I would appreciate any input from you...

I am working on finding my great-uncle's marriage based on a very little information I know about him and his family.

I think I had found his marriage reference as it shows his wife's first name which is what I am after (I naturally checked both spouses to ascertain I have a right couple).

My question is: should I continue to collect other possible marriages or stop with this marriage reference?

This is something I am not sure about because I have no census information to work with or to check via their children's births (I do not know their full names either or where they were born). Even I do not know my great-aunt's maiden name.

I would appreciate any suggestion or advice from you.

Thanks,

Tees

Not sure I completely understand your question, so I am assuming that this is a brother of either your grandfather or grandmother.

If you order the marriage cert surely you would have some evidence that you have the correct couple ie: witnesses that you recognise the names of, your great grandfather`s name, occupations, ages and addresses that fit etc.

I always look on a bit further just in case there is another couple who could also potentially be the right ones. I suppose it depends on how common the name is etc.

Hi Sheddyg

Thank you for replying to this post.

I have no idea if my great-uncle got married in his home county or married elsewhere. I only know his full name and age along with the first name of his wife.

I know they lived in London. That is all information I have on them. All of this information would be on 1931 Census for sure.  ;D

I suppose I should take my advice and continue to collect all the marriage references just in case! :)

Thanks again,

Tees

I would check the rest just to be sure - it may save you some money.

Unfortunately the 1931 census was destroyed in WW2 :(

Hi Sheddyg and Andrew!

Just wanted to update this post--I managed to get in touch with our "long-lost" relations which were able to supply me with the information I was after.

We are still in touch and trying to piece the family history together.

Hopefully, in the near future, we will be having a family reunion. :)

All of this comes from Genesunited! This website can be useful at times providing that both sides are willing to share and communicate.

So, I thank both of you for replying to this post. By the way, the marriage reference I found was spot on. :)

Kind regards,

Tees

Hi Andrew,

How come the 1931 census was destroyed in Second World War??

Thank you for this piece of information as I was not aware of this fact.

That means we have a twenty-year gap in our censuses!

Sad, isn't it?

Kind regards,

Tees

I believe that they were destroyed by fire as a result of bombing.  There was no census in 1941 either (due to the war)

Hi Sheddyg

Thanks for your upbeat post!

Naturally, I shall keep you posted on how it goes. Surely but slowly!

E-mails keep flying back and forth with other branch of my family. That is good!

Now I am going to drum up more photos from other relatives but it is not an easy task when knowing well that some of them do have heaps of photos yet not willing to share them (my offer to scan them and return the photos to them did not work).

Hopefully, this strategy will pull everyone together and help the family history project becomes a success. Big task for me, I suppose!  ;D

Let's hope for the best! My mum always say, "Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose!"

Cheers,

Tees

PS Could you tell me what sheddyg really means in Welsh?
