« on: Monday 14 August 06 10:45 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

Arrived Sth Aust 1839, LYSANDER, from Liverpool. Have marriage cert, death cert, photo of grave site, Register of personal notices. Unfortunately no clue to where he came from, apart from Liverpool.
Can anyone suggest what I should do next. He was obviously English, Edward Moss born c1812, but have nothing else.
Am desparate now for someone to give me some help as to what I should do next.
I am open to all suggestions.
Thanks

The 1841 SA census shows him as Edmund/Edmond MOSS, arrived
1839 per Lysander (Immigrant), occ boot maker.

Address Gouger Street, Adelaide,
Only the Edmund/Edmond MOSS is recorded.

SA Family site has them as follows:
MOSS Edmund, wife, dau, son arrived 1839-07-06 on Lysander from Liverpool

If you think yhis is him then perhaps your search in the UK should
be for an Edmund/Edmond.

Hope this helps.

Hi Saddler,
Thanks for your reply, have searched the Edmond/Edmund Moss re Lysander.

The wife & 2 children are a problem, because he married Rebecca Sarah Bullpit (nee Debney) in 1845 & she became a MOSS. Where did the original Moss family go. Did they divorce back then?.

Have purchased all "Register Personel Notices" hoping I may find something but nothing  except in colony at death Edward Moss  57 yrs,  1869, Gilbert St, in colony 30 years.  It proves he came on the Lysander. Edward Moss marriage cert to Rebecca gives nothing & his death cert shows nothing. Again proves he came on the LYSANDER. There was obviously a first family but not sure how to searcch.

I have Edwad & Sarah marriage cert,  death cert for both, but unfortunately  in SA  it gives no extyra info.
Have searched for his PREVIOUS wife & 2 children,  but a dead end. Have tried to find aa wife of Edward/Edmund dying  but nothing. Family/Search & IGI batch no's search. No luck.

I think, his father was possibly Joseph, only because of naming rights.

Thanks Saddler,
am not sure if I will ever find my relatives.

Thanks HEAPS

Hi Boydi

I was browsing the boards and saw the request regarding Edward/Edmund Moss in South Australia.

I have already sent almost of the information I found re Edward and his wife Sarah Debney.

I did find the following which may be of some interest to you.

PLACE OF RESIDENCE.

Edward Moss applied for a free passage to South Australia in 1837.

His application included Edward having come from Cheltenham, England.
I confess to having heard of cheltenham, but as to where in England it is I do not know, but that just might be a possible lead to looking for Edward's miss and marriage.

There was also a previous marriage of Rebecca Sarah Dabney, who married Edmond Moss.  The following information may be of some interest:-

BIRTH.

Rebecca Sarah Debney born 8th January 1812 at London, and christened 8th January 1812 at St. Luke, Old Street, Finsbury, London.

Rebecca Sarah died 11th July 1890 in Norwood, South Australia.

Rebecca Sarah Debney married William Bulpitt 18th July 1831 in Saint Dunstan, Stepney, London, England.

Rebecca Sarah Debney married Edward Moss 15th November 1845 in England.

Rebecca Sarah Debney was the daughter of Robert Debney and Rebecca?

Hope this little information is fo some help.

Regards

Hello Twinkleberry,
you are wonderful, thankyou so very much. I had requested a lookup from library online re free passage and it came thru 1 hour before you but none of your detail. I was at work and when I checked my emails later that night, what a wonderful surprise. Edward has been a huge brickwall for 2 years & being a novice at searching I suppose you eventually ask the right questions & bingo. The library gave me Cheltenham but you have given me so much more. I do have the marriage to Rebecca & the events from there but it is the mystery of that 1st wife & children. I ordered the SA census cd & it arrived today but unfortunately no additional info. You have given me so much extra to go on, dates etc.
Again, thanks heaps

Cheltenham is in Gloucestershire, it is quite a large city with several parishes, unfortunately most is not on the IGI.  I think the two churches around at the time of Edward Moss were St. Mary (the old parish church) and Holy Trinity.

http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/gfhs/search.htm - you could get the GFHS to look up Edward/Edmund in the Gloucestershire Marriage Index for you.

Are you still looking for Edward/Edmund Moss?   I have an Edmund Moss who married Hannah Lepper in 1829 in Prestbury, Gloucestershire.   They applied for free passage and arrived in Adelaide on the Lysander in 1839 with their 2 children, Emilia Ann born 1835, and a male child (name not known) born 1837.

Edmund and Hannah eventually ended up in Melbourne where they had 4 more children; Edward Arthur born 1843, Mary Jane born 1847, Elizabeth Sophia born 1848, William Thomas born and died 1850.   Edward Arthur Moss was 2x ggrandfather of my husband.

Your reference to Rebecca Sarah Debney is a complete mystery to me so I'm wondering if we are looking for the same Edmond Moss.
