1851 Census: Pendleton - Heys
« on: Friday 18 August 06 06:36 BST (UK) »
I would like to find a family in the 1851 census of possibly Pendleton or Oswaldtwistle or in that vicinity?
The family are Joseph Heys, born about 1817 and possibly his new wife, Melinda, also born about 1817 so both are aged about 34?
Would love to find out more about these relatives :)

Possible marriage record with Joseph's surname mis-spelt:

Joseph HEYES m. Melinda FISH, Dec Q 1850, Barton on Irwell reg. district.  (Barton on I. 20 86)

Lancashire BMD spells the name HAYES: the marriage took place at St Mary's Parish Church, Eccles.

They're probably on the water-damaged part of the 1851 census (I can't see them on the undamaged part), so hopefully someone with access to the unfilmed returns will be able to help!

Thank you very much Rambler, I am sure that is them, the name Heys is easily misspelt and appears in various forms! I know Barton and Eccles very well as I used to live in the area, in Cadishead actually.

Is there anyway I can get the information off the unfilmed returns?

Thanks anyway for your great help, I now know what Melinda's maiden name was ;D I saw a Fish lady only a couple of days ago and wondered where 'Fish' fitted in. Great work!

Regards,

Bram

I know there are RootsChatters with access to the unfilmed returns - hopefully they'll spot this thread!

The Manchester & Lancashire Family History Society sell CDs of the soggy bit: http://www.genfair.com/shop/pages/man/page11.html

Hi, Bram
Looked on 1851 Unfilmed for Salford Regent Rd & Greengate, as well as the Manchester ones.
No luck I'm afraid
There is an Unfilmed for Pendlebury & Pendleton, but I have not got this one,
Sorry
Regards, Dave

Hello
Thanks Rambler and thanks Dave, I feel pretty sure that there is a good chance they will be in the Pendlebury & Pendleton neighbourhood? That is where they were later on and had their children. They were at Little Law, Lower Darwen in the 1861 and were transcribed as Keys, not Heys or Heyes!!

I will see what happens with this thread today and go from there, thanks again for the help.
Regards,

Bram

I've been unable to find them in Pendleton/Pendlebury under HAYS/HAYES/HEYS/HEYES/KAYS/KAYES/KEYS/KEYES

I'd be happy to try any other variant you can think of.

This doesn't necessarily mean that they weren't there. The water damage is so severe that not all the records survived, and some are only partly readable.

On the assumption that Mathew and Ellen are related - parents possibly? or inlaws?  I checked 1851 for them but still living at Ewood, Matthew is 65 born Lower Darwen and Ellen 67 born Blackburn, both hand loom weavers, nobody else in the household.

More details of the Fish lady required

Ewood and Lower Darwen seem to be the area, she gives Accrington for her birthplace in 1861
