« on: Friday 18 August 06 11:40 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

Can anyone help me with the location of this marriage?  It is definitely in Hawick as that is the registration parish of the certificate but is it Allars Manse? and if so, where was that?

Cheers,
Clare

Hi there,

Its definitely Hawick as that is the Parish in which the certificate is registered.  It is more the name of the manse I am looking for - I guess my original post wasn't too clear.  I'll go and amend it now.

Cheers,
Clare

Looked like Allars Manse, Hawick to me Claire. Had a look myself to see if there was an Allars Church in Hawick as thought that it may have closed/merged and if the church no longer in use then the ministers residence may have changed name. In the SCAN catalogue there kirk session minutes from the Allars Church in Hawick from about 1859-1950. It is listed as a United Presbyterian, United Free the Church of Scotland Church so obviously started as United Presbyterian the became United Free in the "merger" between United and Free Church and then went back to being Church of Scotland with the "merger" of the United Free and Church of Scotland. Think that last union happened in 1929. The date looked like 1930. Were the banns of the Church of Scotland? I have a wedding in 1924 when the marriage took place in the manse rather than the church itself.

Thanks Gordon,

The marriage was on 1st august 1930, "after Banns according to the forms of the Chruch of Scotland".  There are lots of marriages in my family that take place at a  manse rather than a church, so I am not surprised at all at that - I just couldn't find any mention of that church.  Thanks for tracking it down for me.  I think I can now confidently add "Allars Manse" to my list of places.

Cheers,
