Benjamin Ford 1848 Sudbury
« on: Sunday 20 August 06 17:56 BST (UK) »
Trying to find birth/bapt./family of Benjamin Ford - birth registered December 1848 Sudbury - would this cover Sturmer?.

Could anyone check 1851 Census please?
(He gives his birthplace as Sturmer Essex in 1881)

Any clues and/or advice appreciated.

Hi Knellie,

The only one I can see is called Bendysh ???
Bendysh is to be seen until 1871 and from 1881 on, he's Benjamin, it seems.

HO107/1787 78 5
Sturmer, Suffolk

Thomas W Ford, head, 26, b. Sturmer Essex
Margaret Ford, wife, 29, b. Wiscoe Suffolk
Catherine Linzell, Illegitimate daughter, 5, b. Belchamp St Pauls Essex
Bendysh Ford, son, 3, b. Sturmer Essex
Fanny Ford, dau, 1, b. do.

Thanks very much Tati

My Benjamin was in Highcliffe Hampshire by 1881 having married in Chelsea.  I get the feeling that the Sturmer reference may be a dead end.

However your help has established & clarified Fords in Sturmer

Well, you might want to consider this:
1871
RG10/95 71 13
St George Hanover Square, London
Green Street

in the household of John H Thursby, Clonel in Militia:
Bendyshe (or similar) Ford, serv, unm, 24, Domestic, b. Essex Sturmer

There isn't any Benjamin Ford born Sturmer ca. 1848 before 1881 and there isn't any Bendy* after 1871...

Hi Knellie.

  If you go to      www.foxearth.org.uk
you can see the 1851 census for north Essex villages including Sturmer. You can search by name or place.
 Very handy site.

Many thanks everyone for your help!!! :D

These names and variants continue to fascinate me.

Thanks also for the 'Foxearth' site ref. - just had a quick look but will bookmark it for future research.

Just to put info together having got out my notes Benjamin (1881 Census recorded at Holmhurst cottages) obviously (well now anyway  :-[) moved from London with his employer John Hardy Thursby & family - recorded on 1881 Census at Holmhurst!!!!

I'm intrigued as to how quickly you put the info. together but I guess that's why you've got lots of stars!! 8)
