Looking for Birth 1837/1838
« on: Monday 21 August 06 12:21 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the birth of a Joseph Horton b abt 1837/38 Boston, Lincs. I know from his marriage cert 1872 that his father was Arthur (Soldier) but from the 1851 to 1901 I have not been able to find Arthur or any clue to Joseph's parents. In the 1851 & 1861 Joseph is a Lodger even in 1851 aged 13 - why would he not be with his parents?

Hi Lin

just a few thoughts

are you sure that the Joseph Horton that you have found on the 1851/61 census is the right person?

are you sure you have the correct marriage certificate?

does the marriage cert give his actual age or just 'full age' ?as the birth year that you have given would make Joseph about 35 when he married( a little old unless it was a 2nd marriage)

Even if you are certain that you have the right Joseph, the father's name on the marriage cert might be a 'red herring'. If Joseph was illegitimate he might have given a fictitious father just to improve his status in the eyes of his bride

happy hunting
Bee :)

Hi Bee

With regards to Joseph being illegitimate, I was thinking along those lines beings Arthur his father has been a pain to find. All it states on marriage 1872 Father Arthur Horton Soldier Mmmmm a fly by night soldier if you know what I mean ;) Joseph's marriage in 1872 was his second, and no I have not been able to find his first - bit of a no hoper this one.
Joseph's age on marriage 35.

Hi, My Joseph ws born 1938 in Boston, Lincolnshire. On the marriage cert his father is listed as Robert, bricklayer. He then moved to Plumstead with his wife Elizabeth Aldridge.  His son Samuel (my grandfather) was born 1872 in lambeth.
