1861 Census Bexley Kent Query
« on: Thursday 24 August 06 00:10 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have an image of
RG9 465 Folio 65
1861 Census
Address Welling, Bexley for Mary Groves and her children.  The head of the household is George Pittis. Both unmarried.   In the coloum for Mary as to her relation to the head of family it looks like gv.JG.

I have not attached the image to this message as I am not sure if I am allowed to on this site.

Any ideas or thoughts very much appreicated.

Thank you
Lynn

Hi Lynn

On looking at the image my first thought was N K for 'not known'.

Hi Lynn
I agree with Sheila : N K (Not Known)

The K is like the initial letter of the place Kent as written in the birthplace column for others on the page (14). If you go back to the previous page, you will find even better eg's of this enumerator's K's. And if you go back  to page 11 there is an example of his N's (in William NUNN).

Cheers

Hi Sheila and Ambly,

Thank you very much for clearing this query.

One more point, the Children are down as Sons (Relation to Head of Family) would this mean Sons of George, even though they didnt have the same Surname and Mary was listed as U??

Thank you both very much.

Best Wishes
Lynn

Hi Lynn

In theory they should be the son of household, yes, but everything is not always as it should be so you probably need to investigate further to see whether they are the illegitimate sons of George or the sons of Mary and somebody else :-\

Hi Casalguidi,

Thank you for the reply.

I have George Groves the son's marriage certificate and it states father as being George Groves - Farmer Deceased!!!!

George the Son was a fisherman and lost at Sea in 1883.

I have searched upto 6 years either side of their said birth year and cannot find any of the 3 boys being registered for Dartford.  Infact if I remember correctly couldnt find any three registered same place.

I am sure that a few years ago I read where registering a birth wasnt compulsory until about 1875.  A lot of births werent registered specially illegitimate ones.

I have a Mary Groves the Mother (I think) going back to 1841, but no sign of John or Henry.  George, Henry and John are still names given to all the male lines of my family even now.

I have been with this family over 2 years on and off and still getting nowhere, lol.

Once again
Thank you all so much

Lynn
