Henry Woods, 1846 - 1921, and Fanny Woods, Warrington, Lancashire
« on: Thursday 24 August 06 21:32 BST (UK) »
I am searching for information about Henry Woods, 1846 - 1921, a Royal Academy artist, and his sister Fanny Woods, who was married to Sir Luke Fildes, also an artist. They were from Warrington in Lancashire.
They are connected to my grandmothers family,  but I can't quite fit it all together. My Great grandparents were Alice and Harry Houghton from Warrington, Lancashire. I think perhaps Alice was a Woods and may have been a sister of Henry and Fanny. Can anyone help with information?

Hi Wendy

Do you know when your greatgrandparents got married roughly?

Hey that's fantastic. Thanks for your help. This is the first time I have been on a genealogy site and I can't believe how fast I got results. I think I could get hooked. Any more information about the Woods family and other descendants would be much appreciated.

It is the artist connection that I was trying to link to. Henry was very successful but also his sister Fanny - she was an artist too, according to Google. Now I know that they were my great grandmother's brother and sister. The thing is, I am also an artist (very successful in New Zealand) and so is my son, Theo.

I am also apparently a direct descendant, on my mothers side, of the English painter George Romney (1734 - 1802) also born in Lancashire.

Hi Sandra,   I think our last messages crossed. I don't know for sure when they got married but I have found amongst my files a  note from a New Zealand cousin that just says Nana's parents were Alice and Harry Houghton, age 21,  married , Warrington. Not sure who was 21. It also says 'pawnbroker'. I thought this applied to Harry Houghton, but it might have referred to William Woods, Alice's father, who I see was a Pawnbroker. Harry Houghton's real name was possibly Henry.

Hi Wendy

Do you know Alice was definitely a Woods then?

I am 99% sure Alice was a Woods. Woods has always been a family name for us. ie my father had Woods as his middle name.

I found an old original publication called 'The Art Annual' about Henry Woods RA, amongst family documents which is what has spurred my interest. There were some pages missing and its not in good condition, but it was a catalyst for me to find out how he was connected to my grandmother.
