Townland of Tisgallon(?) near Aghalee
« on: Saturday 26 August 06 17:18 BST (UK) »
Hello folks,  I have just received birth details of a birth registered at Aghalee, Lurgan 1866.  To me Aghalee looks as if it is in Co. Antrim.  However, I can't find this Townland anywhere in Antrim, Down or Armagh.  I suppose someone has misread the handwriting, but I feel that some 'local' will recognise the townland.  The child in question and her older siblings were all baptised in Lurgan C of I.  Rosemary

Aghalee is indeed in Co Antrim, but was in the Poor Law Union (therefore Registration District) of Lurgan.

The townland of Tiscallen is in the Civil Parish of Aghagallon, also in Co Antrim, and  in the PLU (& RD) of Lurgan.

Lewis Topographical Dictionary shows that the civil parish of Aghagallen [sic] was in the RC union of Ballinderry, comprising the civil parishes of Aghagallen, Aghalee, Ballinderry & Magheramesk.

Thank you Adrian.  I don't have the relevant books for Co. Antrim.  That clears up that question, but I still can't find the Townland on the Ordnance Survey map.  Rosemary

Thanks to all for your help.  The townland was Tiscallen,Parish of Aghagallon, Co. Antrim, and thanks to all the info.  I have now found my long-hunted-for grandmother's birth.  Rosemary

Adrian - I have looked at that map until my eyes are out on stalks.  Did you find Tiscallen on it?  Rosemary

Rosemary

I placed a red circle at Tiscallen.  Sorry, should have explained how multimap works!

Alternatively you can see for yourself on the sample 1:10,000 maps available at:
