DISLEY of Berriew
« on: Thursday 04 November 04 09:40 GMT (UK) »
My great great grandfather was John Disley (b. 1845) of Berriew who married Susannah Jones from Wentnor in Shropshire.  John's father was James Disley (b. 1814) who married Mary Woods, also of Berriew, daughter of Richard Woods, a weaver.  James was the son of James Disley (1773-1848)and Martha (1784-1859).  Does anyone have any more information about the Disleys of Berriew?

Thanks for this - and sorry to have been so slow to have replied.  (I hadn't realised I had a reply waiting for me.)  I'm now trying to trace James Disley (1773).  I'd love to know where he heralded from.

Hi Dizzy

Glad you found your reply!!!!!

I have had a look at 1851 and think this might be a possibility for Martha Disley (James has died, she's a widow)

Living at Lower Dyfryyn, Berriew at her daughter and son-in-law's

John Humphreys 25 farm labourer
Ann Humphreys 22
Mary Ann Humphreys 2
Martha Disley 65 Widow (pauper)  Relationship to Head is ML (mother-in-Law)

All were born in Montgomery.

Is this any help?

Jan

Yes, this is indeed Martha Disley, who was widowed in 1848.  She was living in 1851 with her daughter Ann (b.1828), who married John Humphreys (b. 1825) and whose daughter, Mary Ann, was born in 1849.  I had hoped that Martha's birthplace would have been listed as Shropshire because I have found on IGI a marriage between a James Disley and a Martha Griffiths in Mainstone, Shropshire in 1811, which would fit because their first child was born in 1814.  Mainstone is not all that far away from Berriew, of course. I'll be spending a day in the Shropshire Archives soon, so perhaps I'll make some headway there!

Hi again Dizzy

I wouldn't be put off about the birthplace possibly being incorrect.  It was known for birthplaces to be recorded incorrectly on the census.

I have one of my ancestors on all the Montgomeryshire census and on each one she is born in a different town!!!!!!!

If you need any help at all when you come to the Shroshire Archives give me a shout, I live in Shrewsbury :D

Thanks!  Yes, a number of my ancestors put different birthplaces on their census returns.  No consideration for those who are trying to research them in subsequent generations!!!

There are a number of DISLEY that appear on the 1851 census, several who were born in Berriew.

Let me know if you would like me to list them for you.
