Wall Knoll, Newcastle
« on: Thursday 31 August 06 12:52 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know where this is or was?  I think I've found the death certificate of my great(x3)-grandfather, William Lewis, in 1840 (this one's of corresponding age to his wife anyway), but I don't recognise the place name.
Ancestral names: Lewis, Watson, Hetherington, Barclay, Clark, Regan, Hunter, Murray, Robson, Todd, Carney, Comerford, Urwin, Rayson, White, Purves, Biggins, Wilson, Gibson, Graham, Curry, Kennedy, Greenlaw, Waldie, Armstrong, Hodgson, Harle, Wild, Monkhouse, Donald, Allen, Bowie, Cowe, Ogilvie, Barnes, Pattinson, Williamson, Hogg, Denholm, Kirkwood and Hewitt

If you "google" Wall Knoll Newcastle, you should come up with quite a few pages on this area of Newcastle dating back as far as the 1200's

Thanks for that :)

I've never found the christening of William's son, Peter (my great(x2)-grandfather) in any of the main Newcastle churches.  I wonder if he was actually christened at the presbyterian chapel that these sites say was at Wall Knoll?  I found out recently that Peter's mother (William's wife, Christiana) was Scottish, so there could be a good chance.  Do you think so?

Could be...... best bets to try and find if their records are available - via local records office or LDS films?

Good luck

Silverhawk,

Why not tell Chatters which of the "main Newcastle churches", you did not find the baptism of Peter Lewis ( and of course a clue to the year of his birth ?)

The four parishes listed for Newcastle on Genuki: All Saints, St Andrew's, St Nicholas' and St John's.  He was born circa 1831/32 (he's 9 on the 1841 census, 19 on the 1851 and 29 on the 1861, so pretty consistant with his age).
Ancestral names: Lewis, Watson, Hetherington, Barclay, Clark, Regan, Hunter, Murray, Robson, Todd, Carney, Comerford, Urwin, Rayson, White, Purves, Biggins, Wilson, Gibson, Graham, Curry, Kennedy, Greenlaw, Waldie, Armstrong, Hodgson, Harle, Wild, Monkhouse, Donald, Allen, Bowie, Cowe, Ogilvie, Barnes, Pattinson, Williamson, Hogg, Denholm, Kirkwood and Hewitt

SilverHawk,

Marriage Berwick-upon-Tweed Parish
12 August 1817
Christian Purves m William Lewis.

Baptism B-u-T Parish
9 May 1824
James Purves Lewis, son to William, labourer, and Christian Lewis, of Nesbit;s Lane, Berwick.

Death Registration
Newcastle Dec Qtr 1840.
William Lewis

Marriage All Saints Parish, Newcastle-upon-Tyne
20 Mar 1841
Christiana Purvis m John Muckle

1841 Census.
6th Jun 1841
Ref 845/4-6-5
Stockbridge, All Saints Newcastle
John Muckle 60 tailor. "not born in this county"/Northumberland
Christiana Muckle 50 N/S
William Lewis 15 Yes, born in this county/NBL
Peter Lewis 9, Yes
Daniel Gillan 40 lab N
John McSwed 40 Joiner N

(C1841 ages rounded down in units of 5 yrs, for those aged 15 and over)

So the "S" for Christiana indicated she was born in Scotland.

C1851, 2407-250-6, also has her Scotland-born.
And so she may have been. But she might alternatively have been born in Berwick itself during a phase when it was part of Scotland, not England.

Many thanks, Michael :)  I didn't have the marriage and that's another brother I didn't know about.

I think I found Christiana at Berwick Workhouse in 1861, having survived her second husband.  It says she's from Marygold.  Would you say that's her too?

I still haven't found Peter's christening :(

Silverhawk,

Yes, I too think that is Christana on C1861 in Berwick workhouse ( 3817-73-8)

( I got that a few days ago, but forgot about it. Short-term memory big prob for me.)

Go to > maps.google.co.uk <
search on MARYGOLD.... and there it is just over the Northumberland border, into Scotland..

I wonder if she fell out with her sons ?...

I wonder if the w/h authorities in Newcastle asked her
" home parish" for recompense, and her hjome area said, no, we will not pay you money, but we will give her "in" support here.  ??

I am confident that Peter's bapt is in Newcastle, just waiting to be found. I will trawl as I visit library and Archives.
