CHEESEMAN / VERRALL in Rusthall

I have a great great grandfather called Charles Lot Cheeseman (b. 1839), a coachman/groom who lived in Rusthall and married (1) Emma HAMLYN from Paddington in 1864 and, after her death, Clara VERRALL also from Rusthall in 1871, the daughter of Henry VERRALL, labourer.  Charles Lot's father was Charles CHEESEMAN, labourer.  Charles Lot's son was also a Charles Lot (b.1867), a butler to the Marquis of Sygo and later steward to Hoare's Bank in London, who in 1895 married Emily Louisa PIKE, daughter of Henry Pike (gardener) and Louisa, nee PLANK of Norwood in Surrey.  Charles and Emily's son was Charles Henry (known as Don) Cheeseman (b. 1899), my grandfather, who was principal double bass player in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.  Does this tie into anyone else's research?

Not sure if I'll be of any help at all.  I do have Cheeseman in my family, from the Kent area.  Mainly around Bromley, Dartford etc I think.  Not 100% sure as I don't have to much information but may be able to shed a bit of light possibly.

Thank you for this - and sorry for being so slow to reply (I've been away from this machine).  It would be lovely to know if there's a connection.  The trouble is, there are a lot of Cheesemans in Kent!  My Cheesemans originated (or at least spent most of the 18th and 19th centuries) in Berkshire and it was Charles Lot Cheeseman who moved to Rusthall.  Let me know if your subsequent researches indicate any possible link.  Best wishes, Emma

Oh yes you are so right there are a lot of Cheeseman's in Kent. For our Cheeseman branch one of them married into the ODD family.

My branch of Cheeseman are distantly related but I am in touch with someone connected closer and I'm sure they'd be willing to answer any queries if you have them and they have the answer!!

Thanks for this.  I'm not getting notifications either! 

I suspect my Cheesemans are Berkshire based back as far as the mid eighteenth century, but I can't help wondering if they came from Kent prior to that.  I haven't had any luck in the Berkshire Record Office.  It's hard to prove migrations!

Thanks, Lin, and thank you also Misha, above, who went to school with a Cheeseman in Rusthall!  How interesting!  Yes, do let me know if a Berkshire-Kent Cheeseman connection can be made.  By the way, Holbein painted a portrait of Henry VIII's falconer who was called Robert Cheseman.  The picture is now in the Hague.  It looks just like my grandfather in 16th century fancy dress!  However, Robert Cheseman was the son, I think, of a Kent J.P.
