HAGUE family in Ashton-Under-Lyne
« on: Monday 16 February 04 04:26 GMT (UK) »
Hey all,

Hope that everyone out there is having fun ;).

My family of Hague starts around 1834 which is the earliest date I have.

I have found the family in the 81 & 91 Census and here is the info (plus some added info I had)

Living at Whiteacre Rd, Ashton-Under-Lyne

Charles Hague 47 Laborer in Cotton Mill  Born: Ashton (1834)
Sarah Rebecca 43 Frame Tenter               Ashton (1838)
John                 20 Piecer (Cotton)                 "     (11 Dec 1860)
Mary                 19 Frame Tenter                    "     (17 Mar 1862)
Samuel             17 Piecer                               "      (14 Jun 1864)
Charles was born 15 Jan 1866 but passed away before 1873
Elizabeth Ann was born 14 Jun 1867 but passed away before 1871
Eda                   11 Scholar                             "      (17 Jul 1869)
Elizabeth Ann    8       "                                   "      (17 Aug 1871?)
Charles             7        "                                  "       (20 Oct 1873)
Selina                5        "                                  "      (1876)
George Edwin   3                                            "       (1878)

I found on a vital records cd the birth and christenings of the children except the last 2 as well as the marriages of some. I also found a marriage of a Charles Hague and Sarah Rebecca Brigg in 30 Sep 1860 at St. Michael's (where all the christenings took place) I really want to claim her but have yet to order the certificate.

The marriages of the children are as follows as well as some info that I got from a relative (here's hoping it's right :).

*Mary married Albert Price 1 Nov 1890 at St. Michael's
Mary died 20 Oct 1933 Vulcan, Alberta, Canada
Her husband was a coal miner and died in England before 1924

*Samuel m. Annie Price 11 May 1889 St. Michael's
in 1891 he was a lamp lighter and a gardener and they had
Albert b. 5 Jun 1890 in Ashton
Eda b. 3 Jul 1900
Francis

(Albert and Annie both had father listed as John Price but am not sure whether they were siblings.)

*Eda married twice but I have the name of only one, Matthew Thorpe.

*Elizabeth Ann m. James Henry/Harry Ellis 20 May 1897 in Ashton
George b. 25 Jul 1897 in Ashton
Raymond b. 7 Feb 1902 in Ashton
Sarah Rebecca b. 15 Jul 1905 in Ashton
James died before 1924 and Elizabeth came to Canada with her sisters Mary and Selina and her children Raymond and Sarah in 1924 on the Montcalm.
Elizabeth d. 23 May 1949 in Owlseye, Alberta, Canada

*Charles m. Jane Jones 2 Oct 1902 St. Michael's
James
Jack
Charles

*Selina m. John William Brannon 13 Aug 1898 St. Michael's
John came to England and was suppose to send for Selina but never did. It is assumed that he either died or abandoned her. She came over to look but never did find him, she returned to England and convinced her sisters to come over with her and they did in 1924. She remarried after a while to Nick Rider in Alberta.
Selina d. 25 Apr 1935 in Vulcan, Alberta, Canada

*George Edwin m. Mary (Polly) Thorpe
Harry b. 1903
Jessie b. 28 Dec 1913

I think that Matthew and Mary Thorpe were brother/sister

Well that is that. If anyone has anything at all to add, help, or just make a coment please do. Thanks for anything and everything.

Hi

Is this your family in 1861?

8 Glebe Street, Ashton U Lyne

John Hague 58 Head, Outdoor Labourer
Selina wife 55
Elizabeth dau 14, Cotton Spinner
CHARLES son 26, Cotton Spinner
SARAH R dau in law 22, Cotton Frame Tenter
Edw Weldon son in law 23, Cotton Spinner
Sarah Weldon dau 22, Cotton Frame Tenter

All born Ashton U Lyne

Edw, Sarah and John are transcribed as Weldon but I am not so sure, it looks more like HILDON on the original.

Hope this is of use to you.

Hi Electra

I live in Ashton under Lyne though my family did not move there until 1900. Glebe Street & Albion Street are adjacent to each other. They have been considerably shortened by road building schemes but some old properties exist. Whiteacre Road is still in virtually one piece and not far away. Do you want me to check if the houses mentioned (what number on Whiteacre Road) exist and take pics? See www.streetmap.co.uk

Hi, Electra.  If yours is the Hague family coming down from John and Selina, who lived in Glebe Street, then there's a brother of Charles you're missing - John. b. 1840,  then Elizabeth B. 1846, Mary Jane b. 1853, Samuel b. 1855.   All b. AuL  John  doesn't show at Glebe Street because he'd already left home. He married Ellen Mellor, also b. 1840, AuL    Mellor.

Wow!!! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!

Sorry that I haven't been here to say thanks, I have been having computer problems one after another and haven't been here for a while. Had no idea that all this was waiting for me.

Let me start from the top:
Hey Black Sheep, the 1871 Census is for sure them, didn't have a clue that he worked as a coal miner? Thanks for that.

Sheila, the 1861 Census has to be them, the ages are right and as I haven't come across too many Sarah R's and I'm quite sure that John & Selina are Charles parents, it looks good. Lots of info here. My only thing is where is their son John? He was born in 1860. The marriage for John & Selina could quite possibly be them as I never did find a marriage for them at St. Michael's in Ashton where their children were christened. I will have to see if I can find any kids born in that area. Thanks.

Hi Keith, if you are still willing I would love to have some pics of the Glebe address. I'm pretty sure that the Albion St. one is a parking lot and I already got a pic of the Whiteacre address when I was in Ashton. Thanks a lot for the offer.

Mellor, thanks for all the info, I had gotten some from my trip to England in 2004 but didn't have any of the ones after Elizabeth. I had Eunice, Charles, Edward, Sarah, and John so the additions are great as well as the info about Ellen. Thank you.

You all have given me so much to start looking farther into, it's wonderful. I am so excited about this. Big hug from me to all of you.
