STENSON, anywhere
« on: Friday 01 September 06 15:52 BST (UK) »
I have been carrying ouit a one named study of the surname 'Stenson' for a couple of years. My details can be viewed on the Guild of One Named studies website at www.one-name.org under 'Stenson'. I have the complete GRO references for all births, marriages and deaths for all Stensons, plus a host of other data base references.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who is researching this name or who has this name in their family line.
My aim is to find the origin of the name whether that be from England, Ireland or Scandanavia. I am not interested in delving into the private lives of individuals.

If I can help in anyway, please get in touch.

Moderator Comment: If anybody is interested, then please check out the thread on the Derbyshire Board as well, to avoid duplication of efforts. Thanks :)

Have you seen the site which contrasts name distribution 1881 and 1998 ?

http://www.spatial-literacy.org/UCLnames/default.aspx

seems pretty popular - having problems as I type !

Hi,
I know about this site. I don't find it useful and question the purpose of the research. It seems to try to place an academic thesis behind being able to state where names originate from. At best, it can claim to state the distribution of any particular surname based on a particular census and modern day post codes. It can't claim to be able to state the origins of a name.
In fact any of us could produce the same sort of thesis, simply by looking at the distribution of any surname, say on the 1841C and then claim to be able to state the origin of the name.
For me, this isn't a means to be able to state the origin of any name.
Sorry to be so critical but this site is just a toy.
