You guys are just sooooooooo clever....... you have provided a whole new line to my Barrett line, finding me another gggg aunt and all.

Firstly Norah Janes birth is recorded as....
Birth Free BMD-Internet, [5a-386] June 1852 Qtr Beaminster Reg. Recorded as " Anorah Jane Honeybun" no wonder she took so long to find  .

Thanks for finding Nora Jane in 61 and 71 census's.
her sister "Mary Jane" died in Mar 1852. Maybe this threw her mother into a bit of a spin and grandma stepped in to the rescue taking toddler jane to live with her?

Mary Bowditch is (so it appears at this stage, family search and Dorset opc records) actually is the great aunt of Hannah and her sister (Norah) Jane.

So a sister for Hannah Barrett it seems, I am pretty sure she had a brother Robert and also a sister Elizabeth also of Stoke Abbott fame. Robert married Dorothy Bussell and Elizabeth married Azariah Elliott.

Hi, I'm a descendent of William Honeybun & Sarah Hyde Bowditch.   You are looking for Mary Jane Honeybun born 02/03/1851.   She would not appear on the 1861 census because she died 14/03/1852.

Is this of any help to you?   How far have you got with your research and do you have any family photos 19th Century.

Hi Miggins,
I see you are at the stage I was until last year in looking for the elusive Sarah Hyde Bowditch.

How are you connected to William and Sarah?

Having seen her marriage entry to William on the British Vital records I had spent nearly 15 years trying to find her, until FreeBDM indexes recorded the marriage for William and Sarah
free BDM index -William Honyben = Sarah Travers
Jun qtr 1850 Bridport 8-77.

This threw a different spin on things. Who was Sarah Travers?
Then, trawling thru the Loders baptism on opc dorset site I came across ...
1826; illegible Sarah Hide daughter of; Richard & Elizabeth; TRAVERS; Labourer; Loders;
Born right year, right place  .... a lot of consultation with two very experienced  Honeybun/ Travers researchers, and we all agreed that Sarah was actually Sarah Hyde Travers NOT Bowditch.
(We have not been able to find a Sarah Bowditch that even comes close to replacing her).

I think, and I am only surmising here, that the entry in the vitals was mistranscribed from the Bishop's transcripts. And that possibly the Bowditch name could have come from William's Aunt Mary Bowditch who was possibly a witness at their marriage. Aunt Mary seemed to play an important role in William and Sarah's lives, taking in their daughter Hannah.

This is probably the reason why their daughter Harriet got the Bowditch as a second name.

My delema at the moment is Trying to find Sarah in the 1841 census, only 11 she is not recorded with Richard and Elizabeth, but she could have been in service somewhere.... the hunt continues.

I wish I did have photo's, but sadly no. My grandfather emigrated to New Zealand in the early 1920's and obviously some other family member must have scored that treasure.

Great to have a response so soon!   I have also been researching for some years and only found this site by accident a couple of weeks ago.   The Honeybuns had taken a back seat as I've been concentrating on the Wills family ofSomerset.

On receiving your info. about Sarah I agree that she must be Sarah Hyde TRAVERS as I have now checked this on Freebmd.    I assume the aunt you mentioned is Mary Ann Saint Honeybun (married to a Bowditch) who was William's sister.   Am I correct?

I gleaned from Rootschat 'TreeOfNames' information that has taken me back to 1718.   You may already have this info. but it starts with John TRAVERS - born in Loders 17/12/1718 m. to Elizabeth DIMENT born Corscombe 26/11/1737.   Their daughter Susannah TRAVERS married John Honeybun and were parents of Job (no info. about his wife).   Job was father of Joseph Honeybun who married Hannah BARRETT and they were the parents of William Barrett Honeybun etc.

Harriet Bowditch Honeybun was my maternal Great Grandmother and she married Charles CLEAL 25th December 1875.   The Cleal family was originally Dorset based.   I have a fairly detailed written family tree on them which starts with William Barrett Honeybun.   If you would like any of this info. let me know.

Happy New Year.   Looking at the 1861 Census for Portisham, Dorset on the a web site called Open Parish Clerk for Dorset via Google and found the Honeybuns listed as William Honeyburn aged 34, a Farm Bailiff at Combe, nr. Broadwindsor with wife Sarah (34) together with children Frances Ann, (7), Robert (6), George (4), Harriet B (2) my gt.gt.G/mother and Hannah (9mths.).   It's good to be aware of the different spellings.   

There would appear to quite a few Honeyburns in this area so they are probably related.
