Won't be amazingly helpful but harry would be over 21 as that was the voting age. It was in the 60s  that the age was lowered think (poss 1969 if I can remember correctly)

Hi cazpro,

When you get the marriage certificate for Mary and James it will show their ages.  You will then have a rough idea of when James was born and so will be able to look for his birth.  It will also show their occupations and those of their fathers.

Do you have your dad's birth certificate? That will show the names of both parents, where and when he was born, father's occupation and who registered him.

Could Harry have been related to Mary or James?  To have been on the electoral roll in 1948-1950 Harry would have to be over 21.

Hope this gives you some help,

Nanny Jan

Hi again,

On your dad's birth certificate I meant who was the informant who had registered his birth; usually the mother or the father.   Could James and Arthur be the same man just using different names?   I've got an ancestor, christened Rachel Maria, who sometimes is Rachel and sometimes Maria.   Makes her tricky to keep track of!

Good luck,

Nanny Jan

the long one is a copy from gro, it has all the details i just cant see the informant

Caz

The informant is under column 7- sometimes it's the mum- or could be the dad.

So who was it in your dad's case?

The registrar would have filled it in,so it wouldn't have mattered how well either of your grandparents could read or write.

He would have just asked them their names and put down whatever he was told.

Do you have your parents marriage cert? What name and occupation does it have down for your dad's dad? Was your grandad still alive at the time?

Hope this helps.
