Married Twice on the same day!
« on: Sunday 03 September 06 13:26 BST (UK) »
Hi
HELP!
Searching for a marriage of Henry COOK and Sarah? In Warwick I came across the following in Family Search both seem to be extractions!
Henry COOKE and Sarah PHILLIPS  16 Jan 1798      Over Whiteacre, Warwick M018121 1655-1836
Henry COOKE and Sarah PHILLIPS  16 Jan 1798     Packwood Warwick M018631 1777-1825

Looking both parishes up in Phillimore they appear quite a distance apart
Surely the same couple couldn't have married twice on the same day? Can anyone help to explain what is happening here?

I wonder if the banns were read in both parishes but the actual marriage only took place in one parish.  I think the banns and marriage registers were often rolled into one at that time.

The Bishops Transcripts might be the way to check - perhaps the vicar remembered doing the Banns and when he came to write up the register he put it in error. I have seen batches of marriage entries of that date put in together, perhaps because there was a Archdeacon visit due or something. Accuracy in record keeping was not important to Clergy at that time.
I once found that the Parish Register entry and the Bishops Transcripts for a Worcestershire Parish bore no relation to each other at all !

Also the time of absentee clergy and numerous curates.

Thanks both. Both good starting points. Also with absentee clergy accurate sometimes covered two or more parishes so was he making sure if he couldn't remember which church the ceremony had been in! Will look at both registers to see if the same cleric was serving both churches. must try to trace the births of bride and groom to See if either had family in either or both parishes
